What Happened to My Good Sleeper?

So, I have a 7-month-old son who will just not sleep throughout the night anymore. From the time he was about 3-months-old until about 6-months-old, our little boy slept like a champ. He'd go to bed around 8pm and wake up around 6-7am. We were in heaven. Then, he started waking up again, maybe once a night. So, we'd go put the pacifier in his mouth and for the most part he would just go back to sleep. Then, he started waking up more times and sometimes would scream for an hour. We've tried letting him cry it out, but until we go in there and put the pacifier in his mouth, he really doesn't go back to sleep. We've tried Hylands Teething Tablets before bed, which we thought were working, but then he started waking up again. We've tried baby Tylenol and ibprophen. We know he's teething, he's already gotten one tooth and the other one isn't far behind, but neither of us are getting any sleep. Do we just have to wait out this phase or are there other suggestions out there that we haven't tried yet?

What can I do next?

I wish I had a good answer for you. We are in the same boat. My youngest slept great from about 6 weeks until 6 months, when he started teething. From then on (he's 19 months now), if he has teeth coming, he doesn't sleep well. In between - he sleeps great! I have also tried everything, but have had no success. My only consolation is that he only has 6 teeth left to go until those kindergarten molars.........

Right now I think I am going through that same phase. Our son is a few days from turning 6 months old. He sometimes wakes up once a night to be fed but we don't want to because since he was about 3 months he slept through the night with out it. I think he might be getting teeth in but I am not sure. I also use the teething tablets but that only works for so long. He doesn't like taking his naps anymore either. And for me its kinda hard ignoring him because his screams are soooo high pitched. He cries when he's hungry and diaper changes like this and it gives us headaches. I think it is a phase and it will pass, but if not consult your doctor. I know I will if he keeps it up. Good luck.

Have you tried going to the pediatrician to see if there's something going on like an ear infection?

Our daughter (2.5) has had tubes twice - the first time, she was 10.5 months old after having 5 ear infections that season. She never had the tell-tale signs of pulling on the ear.

Also, he's in the middle of a huge developmental spurt. It's very likely that his sleep patterns are naturally changing. We also had issues with lost pacifiers in the middle of the night. We'd just get up, get it back in her mouth and move on. It was much easier with our son who is a thumb sucker.

Good luck - my advice is to call the pediatrician at least and see if they think it's worth an office visit.

If I am reading this right, you say that he will cry until you go in and put the pacifier back in his mouth? My daughter was like this for a short period of time, waking up and us having to find the pacifier and put it back in her mouth. It got very old very quick. Around 6-7 months old I started putting 3 pacifiers in her bed up near the top (by a sound bear she had) she knew they were there, and with in a week she would find the pacifier in the middle of the night and soothe herself back to sleep. Just a thought, if it is the pacifier that is the culprit. Good luck!

Get a teething necklace. There are 2 types, Baltic Amber and Allspice beads. Search hyenacart.com for Inspired by Finn for the baltic amber. They have tons of info on how and why it works. If you don't like the idea of a necklace, you can get an anklet or bracelet instead :)
I haven't found anyone who makes allspice, so you'd have to make that yourself.

Hi Krista...URRGG I have been there. There were times I would go in more than once to put that pacifer in my DD's mouth because I opted for sleep than hearing her cry it out.
What I did is during the day, put the pacifer keeper in the same spot on your babies clothes and then have him practice finding it..putting the pacifier in and out of his mouth. My daughter LOVED this game...she thought it was funny. At night put the pacifer keeper in the same spot. I figured with my baby it was just a matter of her not having the binki in her mouth and she didnt know how to find it. It took one day of training and then she was able to put the pacifier in her mouth. We also put 2 more pacifiers in the crib just in case the pacifer keeper came off. Good luck.

my youngest was a horrible sleeper and even worse when teething. they are in pain and I don't think its right to try to cio while they are teething or sick. Just give him the extra comfort he needs he won't be doing this forever.

They go through stages where their sleep changes, they are teething,"wonder week period," etc.. My son was a great sleeper from week 4-12, and then terrible till 6 months. We just had a rough patch at 8 months (teething) and now are doing better --he sleeps 10 hours straight through.

Just be consistent and hang in there. If my son wakes, I will go in there and say "not time to eat buddy, go to sleep." After the rough patch is over, he stops needing me to go in there.

I do think you are in a "wonder week" period, btw. So just hang in there.
