Hi A.,
It's not a book but my son loved the "Potty Power" dvd - I wished I had gotten it for him much earlier for him to start getting used to the idea before we actually started any "training" (he was 3.5 when we got it, I think, after a friend recommended).
Good Luck with potty training AND the new baby!

The only book I've read on the subject is The No-Cry Potty Training Solution by Elizabeth Pantley. We are currently, slowly working with our three-year old. He's had constipation issues that really derailed any potty-training efforts. He's now using the potty once daily before bath without a fit. This is a major accomplishment. All the best to you and your little one.

My opinion... he is way too young. You may get him to sit once in a while or even go but if you try this early I think you are letting yourself (and him) in for a lot of frustration. My son just turned 3 and he just became fully potty trained. We didn't start until after he was two and pretty much let him go when he wanted. We would ask but didn't push. He would go at home but not at daycare (which is the opposite from my friend's son). Right before he moved to the "big boy" room, he started going at daycare and he has only had 1 accident during the day and two in the morning waking up. This has been in about 4 months. Once he started peeing at daycare, I still put him in pullups until he pooped there as I didn't want him to "freak" by having an accident in his underwear and then want to go back to pullups. I think within about two weeks of going at school he was in underware during the day and after about another two weeks he was in underware even at night. My daughter is going to be two in Jan. and although she will sit on the potty once in a while and even go, I know she isn't ready.

Good luck.

Happy holidays, A.! I have two oys who are now 10-1/2 and almost 12, and I started putting them on the potty every night before they got in the tub... just to get them used to it. Of course, there wasn't much happening, but they got used to the idea, so when it was time, they weren't scared or nervous. We did it for over a year before we really started potty training. They were both 2 years and 10 months old when we did the actual potty training. Within three days, they were completely trained... day and night! It was awesome! I now have a 14 month old little girl, and we are doing the same thing... sitting ont he potty before her bath. She hasn't gone yet, but I honestly don't expect her to. Best of luck, and congratulations on your little man due in May!! Happy New Year!

A great book for children is The Princess and the Potty. I also have a little boy, and this was our favorite potty book! I based my potty training on What to Expect, Toddler Years.
Good luck!

I don't have a particular book, but I guarantee most of the advice you will get will tell you to put him on the potty every half hour or so and reward him with candy or toys. I personally don't reward with food and I've found that a more reality based approach works best. When he's old enough to pull his pants down by himself and can tell you when he needs to go, then start putting him on the potty at regular intervals, like when he wakes in the morning and after naps and about every hour or so when he's willing throughout the day. Be very matter-of-fact when telling him what the potty is for and telling him the steps. when he's had some success in diapers then put him in cotton training pants. Pull-ups are confusing for children and I have yet to find anyone who had any success with them. When he does pee or poop, smile and be encouraging, but not overly enthusiastic, and show him where it goes in the big potty if you are using a potty chair on the floor. You can't look at this as having him "potty trained" in x amount of days, it takes time. And his desire to please you will be motivation enough without toys and candy. I have found that most kids have major setbacks once the reward is taken away and you have to start all over, so best not to introduce an external motivator. Also, when you put him in cotton pants prepare yourself for 4-6 days of being at home and chances are he'll have times where he's dry for an hour or more and times when he's peeing himself every 15 minutes. It's normal. Just be patient. I hope this helps. I used the traditional methods to potty train my oldest and it was a mess. But I changed methods with my youngest, and it's going much better! Good luck!!

I, too, think that he might too young to try full-on potty training. However, that doesn't mean that you can't encourage him with going. My daughter started showing interest in the potty at about 18 mth. She is now 25 mth. She has only pooped a couple of times since then in her diaper. She has just recently started peeing with any consistency. Certainly, lots and lots of encouragement, praise, and patience; but, no expectations or deadline.

Toliet Training in less than one day by azrin and foxx. Works great. There is a section that gives your a test of things to do with your child to determine if your child is ready for potty training and how to develop the skills that they need if they are not.

I dont know of a book but I have suggestion. I have a 2 yr old and we just potty trained her this weekend and I took the advice from my mother. She bought her big girl underwear with Elmo on it because she loves elmo, on friday I showed her the underwear and she insisted on wearing elmo. So all day friday I let her wear elmo and introduced her to the potty. She had many accidents but after the accidents I would sit her on the potty and have her try some more and would tell her she was a big girl for trying. By the end of the day friday she was wetting a little in her pants but would run to the potty and finish. Saturday morning the same thing, since Saturday afternoon we have had no accidents. She only wears pullups for nap time and bed time. I never thought it would be this easy buts it has been. Good luck, it is very exciting seeing your little one so proud of themself.

I started training my sone when he was 15 months because I was due soon. and we have just been taking it slow. I haven't found a book I like about potty training. I say at this point in time just have fun with it. My cousin used a video with her two boys...this was a few years ago they are now 10 and 8. the video had them potty trained in 24hrs. when i asked her the name or where to get it she couldn't find it and couldn't remember the exact name. she is still looking for me. if i ever find out i'll let you know. Good luck.
