Potty Panties for Petites and Training Advice

We are going to begin potty training my daughter next month. The problem is finding some "training panties" for her petite 20lb frame. We are going to use the absorbent cloth ones, not pull-ups. Any potty training advice, techniques, or books would be much appreciated too!

What can I do next?

When I was shopping for training pants for my son, I found some 1T size at Walmart. Target only had 2T and 3T. My son is only 24 lbs, which is right on the cusp of the 2T size.

Hi, Manige. Try Hanna Andersson; they have really nice, thick, organic cotton training panties in XXS that worked for my daughter (although she was a little bit bigger--about 23 lbs., I think), but maybe they will work. There is a store at Flatirons Crossing mall, or else you can find them online (think it's www.hannaandersson.com).
Good luck with potty training!

There is a Tickle Me Elmo-potty training DVD that I used with my daughter. I really liked it because the DVD taught her how to stop what she was doing when she had a "feeling". The DVD also included hygiene, like flushing, and hand washing. We watched it even after she was potty trained to reinforce the message. I liked it and especially liked the part on, accidents happen and what to do when you have accidents.

We used the "Toilet Training in a Day" method and it was great. We used 2T pants for our little guy and they were big, but he could pull them up and down on his own. Once he got better, I cut a slit in the waist and added elastic his size. It worked well. The small rubber pants worked just fine without any adjustment. When we got around to son #2, we just took the elastic out and used the same training pants again. One of the kids stores had really small underwear, but not training pants. I think it was Children's Place, but I don't remember anymore. Sometimes you can find it at Wal-Mart or Target, but the more expensive ones fit our itty bitty guy a lot better. GL!

Potty training is a giant step for both of you. The best advice that I can give is to keep it light-hearted and non stressful on both of you. Use a lot of reward methods (stickers, singing, dancing, etc..) This age is so fun and they love to be loved. Get her a special book for the bathroom and then you guys can read it and get her to relax. Potty training trains the mother as well as the child.

Two words: buy stock. In Gerber (k, that's 4). I got tons of training pants (Target seems to have more of the smaller sizes, but Walmart had a good selection usually) & even more rubber pants. You can run the rubber pants through the washer but they fall apart in the dryer. Use a lingerie bag if you've got one to throw 'em in the wash. I've never had pull-ups, so I don't know how well they work. We'd just double up on training pants for the night or buy diaper liners (maxie pads w/another name, get the maxi pads-they're cheaper).
I didn't do the quick-train method, just the old-fashioned "they go when I go" method. "We" went potty. We'd each grab a book, Mommy would sit on the big potty, he on his training potty & we'd read til we (he) had to go potty. Or til somebody's feet went numb. A lot of times he didn't go potty, but when we talked about "oh, Mommy has to go potty" it started clicking. He figured out that he could feel when he had to go potty. We didn't always make it, but it was a great accomplishment when he started feeling the urge. I was babysitting a potty-training girl for a while. I had to set myself a timer. Every hour I'd sit her on the potty, & every 30 mins for the first hour after a meal. Training myself was the hardest part-I knew when I had to go, but I can hold it longer than a 2 year old can. Hence the timer.
I also had my boys put their potty clothes in the hamper after we'd started working on potty training. They had to be washed almost immediately or the house smelled like a potty, but it helped to teach them responsibility-I peed in 'em, I've got to take care of 'em now.
I don't really have any great advice besides the timer, talking about it & persistance. I got a great book about potty training from Babies R Us-it was a kid version, kind of a how-to guide that had a button to push for the flushing sound. We wore the flusher out! I don't remember what it was called though. I know it was a board book, written in a childlike font w/a cartoon kid.
Good luck! I did find out that pt the girl was easier than my boy-that's in your favor.

Walmart/Target training pants in 2T, plastic pants in 2/3 and regular underware in 2T all fit my 20 lb 17-month-old son very well. One of the other Mom's mentioned the plastic pants fall apart in the drier...I found if I turned them inside-out, they didn't fall apart as much or as fast! Just get LOTS of underware, more than you think (I have 12 pairs of the thick trainers, 6 plastic and 6 regular underware...for night, naps and trips to the store, we double up 1 pair of thick trainers and 1 pair of plastic pants...seems to work well!) I would just forget the pull-ups...feel too much like diapers and my neice used them for an excuse to just go in her pants if she was "too busy" to get to the bathroom. I used an extreme method that had my son completely trained in just over a week. Now, a month out, my son now consistently tells (with his words...not just me taking him) me he has to go...well worth it. If you want the method I used, check out my profile and look for the things I've been Mamasourcing about and look for the potty training ones...it's time-consuming for the first couple of days, but very fast and worked well for my son! Good luck!

We also skipped the pullups and went directly to panties (once my daughter became familiar with the potty and would go on it - when we put her there... every hour or so). There WERE accidents, but just make sure that you have clothes on her that can't be ruined, and she is in a place where the clean up is easy (tile, hardwood etc). Let her take it at her own pace, and don't discipline for not making it to the potty, rather reward when she goes - sing songs and get really excited. Encouraging her to "tell her Daddy" was always fun for her too. If she has an accident or misses, we just would say - oops you missed the potty. Where does the potty go? In the toilet, next time we'll put it there. We also ended up using "try try try" as a little song. Sometimes an actual reward - m&m is helpful (depending on how you feel about that). I found the excitement we showed to be the most helpful. There were days she would do really well and then we had tougher days. Just be patient. We also stuck w/ diapers/then pull ups at night and during nap time. We've taken away the nap time "protection" but still have pull ups at night. LASTLY, I found underwear (regular cotton panties) in size 2-3 at Target/Walmart that fit well - especially after washing... as they shrank a bit.
Good Luck! and Make it FUN.

We just got done training my son, who is pretty small (24 lbs), and the 2T/3T size was perfect on him. I have seen at Target a 18mo size that may work for you. We used the web ____@____.com and I must tell you it was the best 24 dollars I have spent. The ebook comes with mentoring so you get help from a single source for all your potty training needs. My son was 22 months and he is trained day and night (he will be turning 2 on Monday). They do not suggest the absorbent cloth ones, so I have a bunch I bought before I knew better. Best luck!
