An iPod if he doesn't have one and an iTunes gift card if he already has one.

If he is like most 12 year olds, I would say a gift card to GameStop or iTunes makes a great gift. It will allow him to choose something he really likes and will enjoy- and you get to be the 'cool' relative at the same time! My son is 10 and would love either of those gifts.

Easter gift -- a copy of "the Message: Remix" -- it's a very readable translation of the Bible. I'm a Lutheran pastor, have studied Greek & Hebrew - so I have a sense of how much integrity translations have - and I really, really enjoy this translation. (For instance, in the Psalms, where it used to say "Alleluia! Praise God!" the Message says "Bravo! Bravissimo!" ... it updates it so you get the feel for what the Biblical writers were trying to convey -- without changing their meaning.) Not only that, but we read it to our 5-year-old son and he seems to like it as well.

If you give a Bible to him, take some time to underline or bookmark passages that are meaningful to you -- it gives the youth a place to start in investigating what's in this very large book!
