So What Happened?

Thanks for your advise. We decided to try a Nova Form nutra temp memory foam topper from Costco. Three nights so far and still really like it. I don't expect it to cure my back problems, but so far, my back feels a little better in the a.m.

In terms of comfort, I think they are really nice! However, I have heard that they are very toxic and give off a lot of gasses. If that's something you're concerned about, I wouldn't recommend getting one.

They're great for a little while, but don't seem to last too long. Tops 2 years or so. After ours was no longer doing the trick, we purchased a memory foam mattress. LOVE it!

We had one and, like others said, it held a lot of heat which my husband didn't mind but I like a nice cool bed. It did not stay in place very well (I am a restless sleeper so maybe it would stay in place for others). My husband liked it overall but didn't see much of a difference. We have since gotten a bigger bed and new mattress which is more to our liking.

My memory foam topper is only 2 inches. I got it from Target (so kind of cheap) and after about a year and a half it seems to not hold up very well any more but once again I got it at Target so not the top of line.

My husband HATED it so after two weeks I cut it in half so it is only on my side and no longer his. The other half I have used to make pads for a window seat and chair seats so at least I am getting some use out of it.

It does keep in heat so I sleep with less layers then I use to and during the summer, even with central air, it does get a little warm for me.

My back is touchy so it helps but I have heard if you have a really bad back it is best to just get a NEW mattress that works best for you. I have a few more years before we can afford the mattress I really want (it is the only that hubby & I are both happy with and it cost more then we can sink into a mattress at this point), so for now I have the pillow top but it only covering up that our current mattress is starting to go down hill (it is about 10 plus years old).

My brother had 4 inch memory foam topper and spent money on it and it lasted two years and he ended up getting a brand new mattress and it has worked MUCH better then the 4 inch topper.

They are great, but only if the mattress underneath is quite firm. If you have a soft mattress, and then a memory foam topper, it's a pretty mushy experience.

We had one and it was not very good. You do get what you pay for with those. A friend paid $200 for hers and loves it.

We bought a pillowtop mattress years ago and it lasted 8 months. It ended up drooping/sinking in the middle. My husband has had back surgery and he told us that if you have true back problems, do NOT use a pillowtop or matress topper. They are actually bad for a bad back. He told us the best way to find a comfy mattress is that is a possibility for you is to lay on a mattress the way you would sleep for a minimum of 15 minutes. Most people lay down and get right back up.

memory foam is made from synthetic chemicals, so if you have any concerns about sleeping on something that off gasses chemicals, you might want to pass. Look at natural latex, or wool toppers. We just bought a Savvy Rest latex mattress and love it! Definitely pricey, but worth it. I don't recall if they have toppers or not. but I know during my research there are several companies out there that do natural latex, as opposed to synthetic. I have migraines, and didn't want any off gassing.

Love it, love it, love it!! The one I have is only a couple of inches thick. My mom has one that's 4", and it's much firmer. I can't wait to go to bed at night!

We just got a memory foam mattress topper about two months ago (2 or 3 inches). It's pretty comfy for sleeping, but it felt really warm during those hot summer nights (I usually don't have the AC on during the night). For me it wasn't such a huge different from before, but my husband really liked it until about two days ago. The last two days he has been complaining about a strange back ache in the morning, but we are not sure if it's really from the mattress topper or not. We got the topper in the first place, because he said that our mattress wasn't comfy anymore.

Memory foam - some people love it, others hate it. I think they hold in too much heat.
I have a natural latex foam topper and I love it. I got the firmest I could order and it's just right. It does not hold in a lot of heat, but I use a lighter blanket in the summer.
