NookColor. Best $250 I ever spent!! My sister has a Kindle and raved about it till she got her hands on my Nook!
My 11 year old loves to read and he asked for a Kindle but when I started doing some research on it I didn't realize there were so many different kinds!!! Help!

I have a nook color and I LOVE IT.
It's getting software up date soon that will turn it basically into a tablet PC.
BUT that saying I would not buy a 250$ e reader for an 11 yr old.
My MIL just bought my daughter something called "The Book" by Augen and it works well for her and it comes with preloaded books , some classics like Alice in wonderland, etc
And I get books for her from Books A Million on line it works just fine.
I have a Nook Color and love the thing. My choice was made partly because of the children's books available and the "read to me" feature on the children's books. The Kindle I looked at may have been kinder on the eyes for text only, but I wanted that color screen.
I just purchased a ColorNook for my 14 year old son for his birthday. I also asked for one for my birthday. I love it! Easy downloads, easy to use, I do like the graphics. There is web available as long as wireless is available. You can check email, Facebook, surf the web as well as read.
I don't know much about the others, but do love my Nook!
I would get a color kindle. I currently have a sony reader and it is ok but it doesn't have a backlight which makes it hard to read in bed. I believe the kindle books you buy can also be read on the i touch and i phone too.
Good luck
i love my sony reader touch but it does not have wi fi but u can get books downloaded from your local library site if they have epub or adobe pdf files and from the sony reader store
It's a hard choice..lol I have the kindle but that's only because I went to the store and played with it. I prefered that it had the keyboard on it to type rather than the nook that has a touch screen (I have small chubby fingers so unless i carried a pen around that didnt work for me).. I found that i didnt like the nook b/c a g/f of mine had one and it seemed chunkier/heavier to me than the knidle. but I think it's a matter of personal preference. I would take her to Target (kindle) and maybe Borders (Nook) and than there's Barnes and Noble (Kobo). Go check 'em out and see what she might like an what she really doesn't.. Good Luck it's a tough one..lol
I have a Nook 3g and a Nook color. I love them both! For an 11 year old IU would probably go with the Nook Wifi or 3g depending on what you are willing to pay and whether you want to limit when he is able to download/purchase a book. Wifi only will be only when he is connected to a wifi hotspot and 3g would be anytime. The Nook has expandable memory so he can increase the amount of music/books he has on it. These have been the best techie gifts my husband ever gave me. Use it everyday.
I have a nook with 3G. Which means I can purchase and download new books anytime without having WiFi. I am very happy with it. You might want to go and try them out with your son and see what he likes best.
I would go for one which isn't back lit.
Here is an interesting article

Backlit screens are just the same as TV and computer screens and are not good for ease of falling asleep or quality of sleep.
The kindle is not backlit. I have one and it works fine, no problem reading with a light on.

I have the Kindle and love it. Like Rebecca said, it isn't back lit, so you can use it outside, but need a light to read at night. It is 3G, so you don't have to have WiFi access to download books. And the best... Their customer support rocks!!! My second kindle (lost my first one) fell off the counter face down and the face cracked while on vacation. I called them, told them the truth and they replaced it at no charge and were very appreciative that I told them the truth. I had my new kindle in my hands within 24 hours.
My brother-in-law and I both got Nooks. I carry mine in my purse and pull it out whenever I have time. I also put some of my favorite classical music on it. My only problem is that the high school campus lacks Wi-Fi, so I have to actually get on a computer to access the Web. That, and I still need a light to read and mine's black and white.
It is a bit of a distraction on campus because students are attracted to electronics like moths to a flame. The moment I pulled it out one day there was a discussion about how someday textbooks will be in ebook format. Makes me feel like a Nook commercial.
I LOVE my Kindle. I checked out the Nook, and I like the Kindle more. The Kindle is thinner, lighter, the transitions are smoother, and it's easier to use. Holding it feels very natural, and you can use it left or right handed. I've got books, newspapers, and listen to audiobooks on it.
Avasmom,
Yes, there's a kindle app for iPhone/iPod but there's also a B&N app, too. And iBooks. And probably others I don't know about!
My Mom has the Kindle and LOVES it.
ALL her friends, have not gotten it.
They all LOVE It.
