Visiting the Jersey Shore

Hi Mamas-

My family is looking to go to the beach for the day in a few weeks. We just want to set up chairs and let the kids play in the sand (in their sweatshirts of course!) but we are hearing that there is nothing there. Originally we planned to drive to LBI but it's a bit far for us. Point Pleasant area would be much closer. Anyone know how these areas are? We just want to sit on the beach!
Thanks for any insight:)

What can I do next?

I love to go to the beach in the Spring. I personally would wait till May because then the kids can play in the tide pools. If you want to just sit on the beach, the go to Sandy Hook. But if you want a boardwalk with games then Point Pleasant is what you are looking for. Once again, I would wait till May because they are just starting to ramp up.

Go to Ocean City MD instead. Much nicer.

The season doesn't really open until Memorial day - perhaps a few weeks prior. But there is a lot of rehab going on. You can find some hotels that are open. But these places in Jersey are pretty much seasonal. That includes many restaurants and hotels.

I'd get up extra early because the extra drive to LBI is worth it. Just sayin'. :)

Ocean City is not right by Point Pleasant. It's about an hour or so away. However, Point Pleasant was not hit as hard by Sandy as Seaside. If you're looking to sit on the beach and grab a boardwalk snack, I think you'd do just fine. I think Dawn has a great idea regarding AAA or googling some local businesses like Jenkinson's or Martell's.

Are you a AAA member? You can get free advice from their auto travel department. Also, there's been a lot of destruction that still isn't repaired, due to SuperStorm Sandy. A lot of areas are coming back but there's still beach erosion and collapsed structures. Also, find out from the NJ Tourism Department websites which beaches are open now - not everything is open before Memorial Day.
