Vasectomy Vs. Tubal Ligation - Owings Mills,MD

We've decided that we are done having kids and now we are deciding if my hubby should get a vasectomy or I should get my tubes tied or both. My hubby volunteered to get vasectomy, and I agree with his reasonings -- it is an external procedure for him vs. laporscopic surgery for me to tie tubes, and the recovery is quicker. However, we had neighbors years ago that got pg after the husband had a vasectomy so I'm nervous about the possible failure rate for a vasectomy.

Anyone had their tubes tied? What is the recovery like?

Anyone comfortable with the success rate for a vasectomy? Maybe our former neighbors were a fluke and vasectomies really are reliable?

What can I do next?

A friend of mine has had her tubes tied, and she said that her periods have been painful and heavier ever since. And tubal ligations are also not foolproof. My friend's sister just had her third child after having had her tubes tied several years ago. Of course, she was a fluke, but I think your neighbors were also.

So, if it were me, I would say get your husband snipped. The entire procedure is a lot less invasive, and recovery should be a lot quicker. And if for some reason you ever decide to change your mind, you can always get it reversed. Plus, you've already had to go through childbirth. Let him take care of the flip side.

A girl I worked with got pregnant 5 years after her husband had a vasectomy (and yes he did all the follow up and his count was ZERO) and a friend of mine got pregnant 6 years after having a tubal ligation. So they BOTH fail ... although it isn't common.

The decision for me to have a tubal came with the fact I got sicker and sicker with each pregnancy (losing 22 lbs in the first two months of my last pregnancy = NOT good or fun) and I DID NOT want to be pregnant again ... EVER. I was DONE having babies. I gave birth to my son at 5:11 pm on friday and at 10:00 am saturday morning they came to wheel me into surgery. It was done with a spinal block and I was good to go the next day. I haven't had any changes in my periods (they were ALWAYS really painful and extremely irregular).

My mom had hers tied probably 20 years ago or so and I think she had an epidural (it might have been a spinal block) for it, it was done on an outpatient basis and she was good to go within a couple of days.

So in the end I have no real advice for you LOL Both are very effective ways to prevent pregnancy but both have been known to fail. Good luck with your decision and I hope it all works out well for you.

TL sometimes fail as well. My aunt got her tubes tied and MANY years later became pregnant, and then miscarried. She had an 18-year-old son, and she couldn't imagine starting over with an infant again. Then of course she had to go through the loss of a brand new life. I think both surgeries will have some failures, so I'd talk to my doctor and see what he/she recommends. It makes more sense to me for your husband to get a vasectomy. The recovery is worlds easier.

I have not had my tubes tied, but i did have a similiar surgery when I was 9 weeks pregnant with my second daughter (they thought I had a second ectopic pregnancy and had to remove it)... anyway, my sister had her tubes tied about 3 weeks later, and the procedure seemed almost identical (except I had to have 3 incisions since I was pregnant).
What I can tell you from my surgery is that i was up taking care of my 9 month old the next day! The recovery wasn't bad at all! but, I don't think I would want to willingly put myself through surgery!
