Tired of Being Tired! - Arlington,TX

I feel every day like I havn't slept in days. I'm a stay at home mom of my girls who are 29 months and 9 years old. We are not exceptionally busy, I sleep from about 1am-9am every day, so I'm getting plenty of sleep, and I just can't figure it out.
I have to drink a red bull or five-hour energy drink every day just to be able to clean! I'm happy, not depressed. I just feel like I constantly want a nap! It's frustrating b/c I am usually a very high-energy, active, busy girl! I plan on seeing the doctor, but until then, I'd love some (any) suggestions!!
I think I might be pre-diabetic. Not sure if fatigue goes with that or not, but that's a teeny clue for you maybe? I weigh 100lbs, and I am 5' 3". I took an iron pill today, but it didn't help.
Note: I think I'm prediabetic b/c of the fatigue, the inability to gain weight, being constantly thirsty. And yes, I was anemic during my first pregnancy, and for 3 years after, but I havn't had tested for years.

What can I do next?

You need a GREAT multivitamin. Maybe you are lacking nutrients. I started to take a daily multi-vitamin and it helped my energy level a lot. Most vitamins are junk - if you need help picking one let me know! I love mine.

only from experience, two things come to mind: hypothyroid (have your thyroid level checked) and B12 vitamin deficiency.
I have both. I didn't know about the latter one. I blamed my extreme tiredness on hypothyroidism and had resorted to living like that. I am 100 lbs 5'4''. If I gained one pound I felt like I was walking carrying a building on my shoulders. Did blood work (extensive), turns out I was missing B12. doc gave me a B12 booster shot and man, i mean, I couldn't breathe how awesome and energetic i felt. i get a B12 shot once a month. I only got one, getting a new one this friday. The energy left me 3 weeks after the booster shot. Will be pleading with my doc for two shots a month. Just something to consider. oh and my sleep hrs are 10 to 5. plenty for anyone, just not for me without B12

One thing popped into my mind: iron deficiency (anemia), which can make you feel exhausted despite how much you sleep. I get the 1am bedtime. After the kids are to bed this is the only time you get some peace, if you don't have to much work to do ;-)

I would stop the red bull and five hour energy, take a vitamin with iron and see if it doesn't help. I also wonder if you've got a sleep issue that isn't providing you with enough of the right kind of sleep. You might want to talk to your physician about all of this, or with a homeopath.

Why are you going to bed at 1AM.My kids are in bed by 8 then shortly after so am I it takes me forever to fall asleep i'm always tired I look forward to naps during the day sometimes i have to schedule them in just for myself.I do suffer from depression so insomnia is part to blame right now I should be asleep or trying to but on MAMAPEDIA it's way to late for an OTC sleep aid which I take upto twice a week now for the last few months still wake up during the nite.Change your sleep time drink water and eat lots of fruit and veggies also consider taking a multi-vitamin it helps if your going to have an evergy drink at least do it before lunch I don't drink them but I hear that they keep you awake even hrs after you've drank it.I love my Pepsi thats good enough for me.Why do you think your prediabetic have you had your blood sugar checked recently?Where you anemic during pregnancy I was had to take a supplement of Iron there is also a B vitamin that helps with energy like I said a multivitamin helps

Your symptoms are all symptoms of hyperthyroidism. Blood tests are only sensitve enough to pick up the worst thyroid problems. Saliva tests are better.

Hi Bethany, I was having the same issue but have been taking a wonderful liquid vitamin/mineral suppliment that costs about $1 per day. Check out this website and email me if you have any questions: http://www.yummyliquidvitamins.com You just shake it and take it! It's awesome!

Hi there Bethany!

Your story is so similar to many moms out there, but realize that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. You will probably have to do process of elimination and also visit the doctor if things don't change for the better.

I have to tell you though, I used to feel groggy and energyless EVEN BEFORE I HAD KIDS!!! Well I changed to a high quality vitamin "Vitality 4" and OMG... the benefits these vitamins have brought for me are incredible.
My sleeping pattern has improved
My digestive system is more balanced
My skin has improved dramatically
My hair is not falling out as much
My energy is just such a great turn around from before
My eye sight has improved and I had to have my prescription changed
I haven't been ill with a flu, sinus infection, any of those pesky things.
I just love them!
High Quality that is affordable- you just can't beat it! About $1.70 a day.
YOU are so worth it. They are even delivered to your door!!! Cool ha?
Call me if you want to get the info on them!

I know the feeling and I agree with a couple of the other posts...you should try taking a multi-vitamin. If you are currently taking one and you are still feeling tired, try switching to a better vitamin. Believe me, it’s worth the extra money when you find a good one. Try shopping at natural foods stores like Whole Foods or local co-ops. They usually have a good selection. If you like to shop online, the Oligo brand of vitamins is AMAZING. My husband and I noticed a difference in our moods and activity level within a couple of days.

My husband would sleep for 10 hours and still felt tired all the time. He would have 3-4 cans of Coke during the day to keep him going. The problem was sleep apnea. He "thought" he was sleeping, and I did too. But when he went in for a sleep study, they found he rarely made it to that good REM sleep. We were very surprised. Like I said, we both thought he was sleeping. He now uses a CPAP mask and he sleeps 8 hours and wakes up rested and ready for the day. That never happened before. It was an amazing difference. Our insurance covered the sleep study so that might be an avenue to pursue for you.

I had EXACTLY your problem.

If you're anemic - taking a single iron pill isn't going to help. I was miserably tired for over a year, it was actually my OB that referred me to a hematologist (In Fort Worth) that gave me an Iron IV. It was the first time I felt HUMAN in over a year. (It took about a month for my body to get up to normal.)

If you're anemic, its not just something that will go away. The reality is - if you don't absorb iron from foods, even taking pills won't help. This is straight from the mouth of my specialist.

The doctor I see is Dr. Mary Milam in Fort Worth. If your insurance requires a referral - maybe you can ask your general practitioner for one. Sounds like either way you should go in for a physical and discuss your concerns with your general.

I can relate, and right now I am drinking coffee to stay awake to do some work while my child is fast asleep... seems like every day is the same: filled with laundry, cooking, cleaning, etc. I'm a single working mommy, and I have no energy, either!! But I do enjoy the little moments. I think you might need a little break from being a mommy, because as much as you love it, you need a little down time, too. If you can afford a babysitter for an hour or so just to pamper yourself (take a yoga class, get a pedicure, take a walk in nature, etc.) then I think that can help. It helps me when I do this, but I don't often find time to do so... I find that just taking my son out to get fresh air (running track or park) helps me so much. It lifts my mood, gives me healthy fresh air, and both my child can enjoy this fun (and free) activity time together. Hope you find ways to stay healthy - mommies need to take care of ourselves first, so we can be better to our kids, too. xo.

Ask your doctor to check your thyroid levels if s/he doesn't suggest it. It's not that unusual for the stress on the system of child bearing to mess with these sorts of hormones and leave you in a bad state.

Also, eat tons of raw plant material, preferably at every meal for a month or two and see if that helps. When we cook plants we break down the enzymes in them which make them easy to break down and utilize in our bodes. So after a depleting thing like having a baby and nursing your reserves can be in the toilet, and all the cooked plant material in the world isn't doing very much to restore your supplies.
