Thumb Sucking - Columbia, SC

My 8yr old daughter used to suck her thumb. After seeing the dentist he showed me that the roof of her mouth was forming to her thumb and she would need braces to corect this later on in life. So we visited the orthodontist and they put an expander on her to correct the formation of her mouth. This stopped the thumb sucking! However this is alittle pricy.

I sucked my thumb until I was 8 and finally stopped when my stepdad made me go to sleep with a glove on my hand. It only took a couple nights. It was a struggle to get me to leave the glove on at first, but it worked. Good luck.

Hi Tammi I to had this problem and I was told by the doctor I took my son to that this was like a security blanket like on charlie brown the little boy as a blanket well some children will suck on there thumbs for there security blanket so in return i took my son to walmart an got him a spider man blanket and although it did take a few days I said to him lets not suck on your thumb and use this instead now instead of sucking his thumb he takes his blanket every where but school

Check out www.folica.com they carry a product called Mavala, my mom used something similar on me when I was 6 and I stopped, it is not just bitter tasting, it is nasty and you don't want to put anything near your mouth. It will not hurt her, but she will not want that in her mouth. It is worth a shot.

when i was little my mom used to put really nasty tasting fingernail polish on my thumb, it worked for me after a few weeks of the nasty stuff

I have three kids who suck their thumbs. We started breaking my children by putting bandaids on their thumbs and constantly reminding them to remove them from their mouths. Although they are not completely free from thumb sucking (they get caught when they are sleeping sometimes) but they are no longer sucking their thumbs on a constant basis.

My seven year old still sucks her thumb too. We've tried everything. Just lately we started having her wear socks on her hands at night. This seems to be working. I don't know about your daughter but mine only seems to do it at night. I think they make special mitts you can buy for this purpose but the socks work fine. Good luck.

I sucked my thumb until I was 7 and my parents finally broke me of it when they painted my thumb nail with that really nasty clear polish that is for people to stop biting their nails. Also I've heard of people buying styrofoam balls too big to get your mouth around, and making a little thumb hole and putting those on at night. Just something too big to fit in the mouth,but light enough to not bother a sleeping child. Hope it helps!

i sucked my thumb til I was that age and my parents tried everything and Nothing worked. They had to break down and get this dental applience put in the roof of my mouth with spike on it. It didn't hurt unless I tried to suck my thumb. I actually thought it was pretty cool! LOL AND another plus was that is straightened up my teeth and I never had to get expensive braces!! Ask your dentist about it!
