My daughter will be 4 in December...in the last 3 months she has started sucking her thumb, just like a baby.
She has NEVER prior to this sucked her thumb at all.
Is this normal or is it maybe that something is bothering her?
How can I break her of this??
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

What can I do next?

with some habits, the bigger deal you make of it, the more glamorized and sought after your young child may be to continue doing it. i definitely agree to investigate into it, but she's 4- i doubt you're likely to get a logical reason out of her. LOL! studies have shown this doesnt cause buck-teeth, so no need to start putting money into a savings account for braces. its likely she'll stop just as sporadically as she started. :D best of luck!!!!

I think it is mean to put anything on a child's thumb to stop this. Let her soothe herself... big deal. She may grow out of it as easily as she began the behavior. I would consider what may have made her feel more vulnerable lately. She may also be mimicking a younger child for attention.

it is both normal and could be prompted by something bothering her. rather than trying to 'break' her, how about some investigation and redirection?

put hot pepper juice on her thumb. or they make some kids of thumb sucking stuff I think you can get it at babies rus and it has a very nasty taste it helps break them i would just tell her shes not a baby to cut it out. She started doing it its not like shes done it from birth.

She is 4 years old... so you can talk to her about it... just asking her 'why' she sucks her thumb... or see what she says about it.... or if she got the idea from anywhere....
Just ask her, in a neutral way....

Usually, things like this or biting fingernails... is to relieve stress or anxiety, or self-soothing etc.
Does she have a lovey??? Or just her thumb?

It can affect the mouth sometimes.... making the teeth crooked etc.

Just try talking with her.... is anything bothering her? Stress? Anxiety? Anything bothering her in school if she is attending preschool? Anything at home? Any changes at home? Any siblings?
