Still Lactating

My son weaned himself from breastfeeding in Jan after 20 months. Before this he was only nursing right before bed and sometimes first thing in the morning (because he wouldn't, he wanted a big boy cup). It is now the middle of Aprl and I'm still lactating. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there any reason for me to be concerned, or is it fine just to wait it out? Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

Hey F.,

I stopped breastfeeding at 6 months because I just couldn't keep up. I'd lost a lot of weight and I was working full time and when I pumped, I'd literally only get about an ounce. When we weaned, I didn't have let down a single time. However, I remember it was at least 2 or 3 months after I'd weaned that I still had milk in them. My thought is that its got to be very normal and definately don't worry about it. There is a completely good side to this--as long as there is milk in them, they'll still be a nice size and much prettier than what you're left off with when you're dry completely. Enjoy them while you have them! :) And definately don't worry. My theory on it is if there's no pain, there's no problem. :)

If you're still concerned though, call the hospital where you delivered, or a local hospital with a labor/delivery section and ask for their lactation consultant. These ladies know absolutely everything there is to know about your breasts and the many changes they are going through.

Good luck sweetie!

From what I've heard from a coworker of mine who nursed her son for 18 months, this is totally normal. I think it just takes a while for your horomones to go back to their pre-breastfeeding state. I just weaned my 9 month old son, so I will also find out for myself just how long I'll keep lactating. I really don't think you have anything to be concerned about, but if it bothers you, just call your OB/GYN dr. and ask. I'm sure you wouldn't be the first or the last with this question. Hope this helps some!

Hi F.,

First let me say good for you on breastfeeding for 20 months! I breastfed my daughter for 13 months and my son for 15 months. Both self weaned (so much easier that way!)

Anyway, I read your post and wanted to let you know I think it is completely normal. I dried up pretty fast with my daughter but I know I stopped bfing my son last April and I was STILL "leaking" well into the summer and even into early fall. Especially on one side. I know any bit of extra pressure in the area would cause a leak, especially at night when I wasn't wearing a bra. So I wouldn't worry about it, just going to take some time to dry up! Lovely huh!?!?!?! :)
