Periods After Pregnancy

My son is going to be 9 months on May 8th and I haven't gotten my period yet I'm still breastfeeding although now that he's on solids more I've been breastfeeding less. Right now he nurses at 6am (both sides), 8:30 am (one side only), noon (one side only), 3pm (both sides), 6pm (one side only), 8pm (both sides), and 10pm (very breifly both sides). I've been on progesterone only birth control since 6 weeks after birth. I'm not pregnant. I got the impression from other friends and my doctor that I would have gotten it by now. I'm starting to get concerned but at the same time enjoying not having one. So my question is...is this normal? Should I bother my doctor with this or just enjoy not getting a period?

What can I do next?

My baby is 4mths old now and I finally got my period after I stopped breastfeeding a few weeks ago. (I wasn't able to produce very much milk and so I finally had to give it up.) My doctor told me to expect it shortly after my 5wk visit so I had been waiting a while for it.

Normal--I got mine with my first son when he was around 8 months old (not totally regular), and my second just after he turned a year. I never really kept track of when/how much they nursed, but my first nursed until 11 1/2 months and my second until well past 13 months, so don't worry. Some women have them early, even when nursing. Unfortunately, mine still are completely irregular since they started last August. That has not been cool, but I loved going a year without one. :)

I got my periods when my kids were 9 months, 14 months and 18 months. Even when they were nursing less. When I was on Progesterone only pills my baby was 18 months old by the time I got my period... I'd just enjoy not having a period... congratulations on your little one!

This is normal. It took me at least 7 months to get mine after my first child, and she only breastfed for about 9 weeks. This time I'm breastfeeding exclusively and at 8 months have only had a few days of spotting. I don't expect to have it for a few more months, so was surprised by the spotting. Everyone is different, so don't worry about it, and be happy for the break. ;)

Very normal. My son BF'd until he was 19 months and mine did not start until a week before his first birthday.

I didn't get my period till my son was 15 months old. I nursed till he was 18 months. Everyone is different. You are still nursing quite a bit, so it may still be awhile. Enjoy it!

yes, this is normal. You are nursing every 2-3 hours on the same schedule everyday. When you start changing your schedule and/or eliminate a feeding, your period may come back.

With baby #1, I pumped at work every 3 hours & nursed him twice at home M-F then on demad on the weekend until he was 14 mos. When I stopped pumping at work, I got my period the following month. With baby #1, I'm following the same schedule w/baby #1 and at nearly 12 mos, I still haven't gotten a period.

Every woman's body is different, but you are normal not to have a period with all of the milk you are producing for your baby - enjoy it!

I would not worry about it unless you are concerned with other things going on in your body. With my son, I did not get my period back until just after he turned one. He stopped nursing at 8 months, but I pumped for him until about 11 months (and then used the milk I had been freezing until he was one). I think my period came back about 3 weeks after I stopped pumping. With my daughter, I nursed her until she was just over 2, my period came back when she was about 18 - 20 months. I know some women who get their periods back while nursing, but I know quite a few who don't until they stop completely. Enjoy it while you can, because they will come back!!

Sounds like you're still nursing an awful lot. You may not be ovulating yet. With my first I didn't get my period back until the month AFTER he was weaned (over 1 year)! Unfortunately, every baby is different and with my second my cycles were back 8 weeks later. I'd say just enjoy it. Good luck!:)

Hello A.,

I do know that it can take a while to get your period after having a baby especially if you are breastfeeding. I had a baby in December and had my first period in January but I did not breast feed at all. When I had my daughter I breastfed her and I remember it took a few months before my period returned and then it was very irregular. 3 years later I discovered my super long cycles and irregularities were due to hypothyroidism (common after pregnancy). 9 months does seem like a long time to go without a period so I might check w/ your doctor that there is not an uderlying issue or to make sure that the progesterone you are using is doing what it is supposed to and is being used correctly. Too much Progesterone can stop periods (I took it to help regulate my cycle to get pregnant with my daughter) as I was advised by my doctor.

With both my sons, I didn't get my period back until I started weaning them at 13 months. I know that's not the way it is with some women, but it was for me and I enjoyed it. Trust me, it will come back with a vengeance, so live it up now! :)

I breastfeed my son until about 13 months. I think I got my period at about 11 months. Enjoy it while it lasts, the first postpartum period is a doozie! :)

completely normal. Many women don't see Aunt Flo until their baby is completely weaned (which for some isn't until 2+yrs old!) Personally I average 11 months before my period return...hoping for longer this time though :-D

Just enjoy...after my daughter was born my period returned when she was 15 months old (almost exactly 2 years after my LMP). She was still nursing, but I worked full time and I stopped pumping when she was a year old. My son will be 9 months old on the 16th, and I hope I don't get my period back for another 6 months....

The same thing is going on with me. My twins will be 7 months tomorrow and I still have not got a period. I am still pumping (breastfeeding didnt work out right) and I am also on progesterone only birth control pills. Not only does breastfeeding help with not getting a period but so do the progesterone only pills. So its normal that you (and I) have not gotten our periods yet. ENJOY!! I am :)

It's totally normal that you're not having your periods yet. So enjoy not having your periods. It's just one of the benefits of breastfeeding. If it helps to know, I went 18 months without a period after the birth of my children.

I'm not sure how the progesterone pill affects peridos but many moms don't get their periods for a year or more. My best was 15 months. it was great! Don't look a gift horse in the mouth, and good for you for breastfeeding your baby! Best thing in the world for both of you!

A lot of people don't get their period while they are nursing. I nursed both my daughters for 6 months and didn't get my period again until a few months after I stopped. I just stopped nursing my youngest in January and I got my period for the first time the beginning of April. I hadn't had it for almost 1.5 years (since getting pregnant, nursing, and then the couple months after I stopped) and I sure didn't miss it!! I would say to enjoy not having it!! ;-)
