Has anybody done this and what types of activities have you done? We are in the process of getting rid of our debt with Dave Ramsey and we have not taken a vacation for almost two years and I thought it would be fun to act like we are on one but at home. Thank you for your time.

What can I do next?

Board games, riding bikes, 'hiking' or walking the neighborhood, crafts.

I've had friends that did this and also do NOT answer their phone or the door. They are vacation! To me that would be the best part!

Good Luck and have fun.

Visit museums - the free kind...
Do the free movie day at the theater - it used to be Tuesday mornings at 10.
Find an easy craft - pinecone bird feeders or something...
Do storytime at the library.
Donate 10 items to Good Will.
Roast marshmallows in your fire pit in the back yard.
YMMV

This would be hard for me because the things I like best about vacation are 1) maid service makes the beds, cleans the bathrooms and changes the towels 2) no cooking, cleaning dishes or meal prep - we eat out for breakfast and dinner and 3) spending a bit of everyday in the hotel pool. That's just me.
Other people have different ideas about what is fun and relaxing. How about camping in your back yard and cooking over a campfire? Toasted marshmallows and S'mores after hot dogs and beans cooked in a cast iron pot in the coals definitely sounds like vacation food to me.

This is the only type of vacation we take since I first got pregnant with my son! Especially with a toddler, taking a "staycation" is great without all the traveling hassle, expenses, and adjustment. We have a pool so that helps a lot but if you don't, that is ok too. One day a year we go and stay overnight at a resort 45 minutes away. We do this in the winter and they have an indoor pool and fun things to do. It gives you the illusion that you have gone on vacation, but its really just 1 night. If you don't want to stay overnight anywhere, then block out a few days for you and your spouse to be off with the kids and plan something fun everyday. During the summer there are lots of free or almost free activities like Carnivals, 4-H and other agricultural fairs, historical sites, farms and zoos, library activities, parades, and parks. Also, if you go out to eat, make sure its lunch since its much cheaper. Pick out some unique cuisine you have never tried and go for lunch. Why not visit a nearby big city...there are lots to do including museums. You can also go peach picking or strawberry picking in the summer and apple picking in the fall. Good luck!

Do you like to camp? You could camp out in the back yard - grill hot dogs and hamburgers.

We just got through with a week long family get-together and saved a ton of money by buying sundae fixings (frozen yogurt, sugar-free chocolate sauce, etc.) and doing a self-serve dessert with each dinner to make it special. Also, we divided everyone up into teams and had each team prepare breakfast, lunch or dinner for that day...it helped get everyone on board with the planning and excited about participating.

As Stacy H., suggested camp out in your back yard. My nieces and nephews used to love that when they were little! Also, if you like camping, you can always camp out at your local state park. The last time I did that, I fished, swam, walked the bike trail and visited an historic textile mill and museum on site. It's been a few years, but it only cost $2 per night to rent the camp site. They also had real bathrooms with shower stalls. Have tons of fun!

Kansas City has a ton !!! of free things to do! You are very fortunate to live there.....in fact, that's where we took our vacation earlier this summer. Actually 3 times in the last 5 years!

Just hit their tourism website or hit the tourist center by the stadiums (off Hwy 70). Lots of good ideas at both places! Have fun....
