I have a 10 year old son who has been having nervous tics. Some are worse than others. They are always the muscle groups from the neck up. Has anyone out there had a child with this and what options are there for treatment other than medication. Thanks for you help!

Hi B. I have an 11 year old son who the Dr. says has a tic also he blinks one eye before the other and sqiunts his eyes funny not all the time. I thought it was neurological and asked to have an MRI the Dr. says if it isnt bothering him to just leave it alone he may or may not grow out of it. I also had his eyes checked he has great vision. He doesnt have any other symtoms but it bothers me to see him do this i dont want him to be made fun of. I dont want to give him medication if i dont have to. Does the tics bother your son ?

My son had that too and I thought they were seizures. We took him to the doctor and the ER at one point and they did a CAT scan. They said they were nervous tics and they were harmless. But sometimes they were so bad that he couldn't go to school. It was terrible. I discovered that they were food allergy related. If he eats certain foods his tics would increase and if he avoided those foods they would go away completely. He also got those if he was around mold. We lived in Missouri for a year and it was so humid and the mold made him worse. He is in High School now and he will still get those when he eats things he is allergic to. He tries to tell me he out grew his allergies but then he can't hide those tics from me. :) We live in Arizona now so we don't have to deal with mold. Good luck!

Dear B.,

I've dealt with kids with tics a lot.

The two things that really seem to help are;

1) Ignore them completely and
2) Enroll him in either singing or dance classes (or both)

Rythm (and fun) seems to help alleviate tics and retrain their body to more fluid movement.

Something may be bothering him and he so not likely to say.
Maybe make some minor changes.a really cool necklace or t-shirt as a confidence builder- conversation piece.
my child once had a habit of shaking his head (jerking it in a way). We cut his hair very short (in a cool way) and i think his confidence somehow went up and the jerking took a few days, but is gone.
