Sleep Study for a 3 Year Old - Pediatric Sleep Inst of Plano

Today I took my 3 yo into the ENT to have a look at his tonsils because our pediatrician said they look a little large and my son has been having problems consistent with "bad" tonsils. Anyway, the ENT recommended we do a sleep study to find out if he is having trouble breathing while he is sleeping. He does snore and seems to stop breathing for short periods of time while napping. So, have any of you been through this and what is it like? Any advice will be much appreciated.

What can I do next?

Yes, my son was 2 1/2 when we did the sleep study. He too had enlarged (giant) tonsills due to repeated infections. The sleep study was tuff to attend and go threw. (NOT at the location your going to) wanted me in way past his bed time (10ish) and they wake you way too early (5ish). The sleep study did not come out with the results that I expected. His sleep apnea in my opinion was much worse at home than at there. He ended up having both his tonsills and adnoids removed last August. He now eats and sleeps much better. Previously he woke up at least 7 times a night or more. He had never slept through the night either. He would spit all his food out after chewing it for more then 5 mins.

Good luck,

They have a lot of wires and things they strap to you. It is not the easist of situations for a 3 yr old to understand. If you feel like you know your child has an issue then talk to the doctor about it. Maybe you can video his sleeping to show the doctor. Either way, see what the next steps are if you get a positive (for issues) on the sleep study. Then decide if you want to put him through it. Good luck.

I think it would be a waste of time to have a sleep study performed. I would just go ahead and get his tonsils removed. Those studies are a pain to plan and attend, even for an adult.

I don't know about that age but at 11 my son had it done and I was given the option of spending the night. My son said it was okay to leave him, so I did. He kind of liked the gadgets and wires.

The room was like a hotel room, with a double bed. It was a nice set up. There are other sleep issues that can be caused by things other than tonsils, so it's up to you.

Insurance is a big question. If they don't pay for it, it is very expensive.
