My 3 year old daughter snores every single night. At first I was not that worried about it, but here lately it has gotten alot worse and really loud. She even coughs alot through-out the night sometimes making herself sick in her sleep. She is tall for her age, but not over weight at all. She eats healthy and doesnt snack much! She doesnt get alot of dairy because when she was younger it would always make her sick. I thought at first the coughing might be from her getting to hot, so I made sure the room was sorta cool-still coughing and snoring all night. Then I thought maybe shes getting to cold-still coughed and snored. I've tried laying her different ways, sitting her up, giving her water to clear her throat but nothing stops the snoring??? And to top all this off she tosses and turns all night and screams out like shes in fear begging for "whoever" shes dreaming about to stop. She doesn't watch scary shows and we try not to yell at the kids! My 7 year old has never done any of these things so this is all so unknown to me! Oh and btw noone smokes in the house or around my children and we try not to be around smoke so I'm still at a lose for words to why she coughs so much while sleeping along with the snoring and screaming... Please help! Thank you!

My son did this when he was 3 yo. I didn't realize how loud he was and how much of a fitful sleeper he was until we shared a room on vacation. I took him to an ENT who didn't think much of it until he did an Xray of his adenoids and told me that they were the largest he had seen in a long time. After the adenoids came out, the snoring largely stopped unless he had a cold. Everything you mention suggests enlarged adenoids. Get a referral for an ENT.

Do you know if she has large toncils? My son used to snore A LOT, we went to the ENT for ear problems and he took one look at him and said, 'this boy isn't sleeping well, he needs his toncils out" he hasn't snored since.

She very likely has oversized tonsils or adenoids, which could explain the snoring. I was the same way, had my adenoids removed when I was about 8, because they were also effecting the movements of my teeth and mouth shape.

Ditto to the tonsils/adenoids - my dd had them out at age four & her loud nightly snoring immediately stopped - she also looked so much more rested! The pediatrician referred us to the ENT when it was clear that they were not likely to shrink on their own. Very glad we did this!

Two words....

BIG TONSILS.

We went through this with one of our daughters. Getting her tonsils out took care of it. :)

I am having similar symptoms with my son. We went to our ped and he gave me some flonase nasal spray (has a steroid in it) to try first and use zyrtec daily. He also gave me the name of an ENT so I think we are going to set up an appointment to have his tonsils and adenoids x-rayed to make sure that isn't the problem. The nasal spray/zyrtec doesn't seem to be taking care of the problem. The ped said signs of large tonsils/adenoids are snoring and daytime fatigue. Good luck. I know how disconcerting it is when your baby snores like a freight train!!

i am with others on this on adenoids my daughter had tons of ear infections had to have tubes had allergies like crazy they took out her adenoids when they did tubes said it can cause all these problems including snoring having to brath with the mouth open at night bc the adenoids are at the back of the nose area and sure ebnough when they removed hers they were HUGE about 7 times bigger than they should of been and was nearly completly blocking her breathing passage which intend caused her eustachian tubes to not beable to drain propperly. get a refferal to see an ent from the dr. GOOD LUCK

I agree with the others. Seek out a good ENT. If her loudness continues after her tonsils and adenoids are removed then you need to consult with an allergist. It is the route we went and has been a blessing. You could always try giving her zyrtec before bed (a non drowsy, non-habit forming, over-the-counter allergy medication) and putting a vaporizer/humidifier in her room. This may make a WORLD of difference as well! Another thing I have done is making sure I wash the sheets and bedding at least once a week and vacuum the room.

Childrens hospital has a wonderful sleep program you can ask your pedi for a referral. My neice had to go for the same reasons and she had sleep apnea. Her tonsils were also humongous and after they were removed she was fine. Check in to. A good nights sleep is essential for healthy kids and adults!
