Hey G.,
Yes, that's totally normal. And, hopefully for you it will be a short phase. :) I can't tell you how many times I've seen the movie Cars.

This really isn't a very serious topic but I'm just so humored and puzzled by my 2 1/2 year old twin boys' when it comes to the movie "Cars". Basically, they are obsessed with it and I mean seriously obsessed. All day long all I hear is "Watch Cars, Mama?" and they have major meltdowns if I say no. To be honest, they have watched it at least once a day for the past two weeks and beg to watch it again as soon as it's over. They have zero attention span when it comes to just about anything but they will literally sit the entire length of that movie and not move a muscle. Is this normal to be this obsessed with just one movie? Any of you out there have similar experiences with your kids? I tell you, I don't know how many more days I can stand to hear that movie, I have it just about memorized word for word it seems. I know they don't really understand the story so what's the obsession with it? Do I have future NASCAR drivers or mechanics on my hands? LOL

LOL!!! G., I feel your pain. My 3 yo, well 3 in 13 days, is home sick from preschool today. I have watched Ratatouille FOUR times today. I think he actually set through the first run, but jumped and played, etc, etc, etc. If we hadn't picked him up from preschool yesterday with 102.6 temp, I would almost bet he wasn't sick by the way he's acting today. Last night he watched Cars too. He's also this way about Finding Nemo, and Toy Story.
I think it's normal for young toddlers to have obessesions with certain movies, TV shows or cartoon characters....and they go through phases.
My son first went through the Wiggles thing --- loved everything Wiggles....then moved onto Thomas the Train and trains in general, he loved them so much!
Then it became superheroes -- Batman, Superman, Spiderman. Then Pirates --- of any kind -- 'pirates of the Caribbean" and "peter Pan".
any boys typically have fascinations with speed, hereos, vehicles/transportation, or tools (Bob the Builder/Handy Manny)....so his fascination with Cars does not surprise me. And it does not necessarily mean they'll grow up to be speed racers -- or they could.
My mom used to always say that my son was going to be an engineer (when he was going through his Thomas train stage)....and then he grew out of it and moved onto something else.
They just have a favorite thing right now....they'll move onto something else before you know it. But hurry up and document this obsession, because you'll forget. Take pictures...take video....i have my son's Wiggles, Thomas, and pirate stages documented! i love it!
My 2 year old loves Cars too. He sometimes sleeps with a big Lightning that is plastic and makes a lot of noise. I bought him a plush one for Christmas. I think it must be the cars that they like so much. It is normal and it is okay. My son doesn't demand the movie everyday (our DVD is skipping a lot anyway), but he will happily watch it when it is on. Maybe you could buy them some Lightning toys and they wouldn't be so hooked on watching the movie. Have fun with it!
Yep, my 23 month old wants to do nothing but watch "choo choo" (Thomas the Tank Engine). Right now he has a double ear infection, so I have been lax in giving him a lot of TV time, and I can't begin to tell you how sick of Thomas I am!!!! Plus my little one won't watch by himself; he insists I sit with him. So be thankful that you aren't subjected to watching Cars yourself all day every day :) So yes it is normal. If you feel they are watching too much TV, you may just have to suffer through a few days of meltdowns to break them of the habit. But of course that is your personal choice. If you are ok with it, don't worry it is normal. If you aren't, maybe find a good playgroup and get them out of the house a little more, or go to the mall, etc to try to get their minds off if it. Good luck.
My 2 1/2 yr old also loves Cars and McQueen.
The thing I've noticed with TV and movies is the more they get, the more the beg for.
If you're tired of it and want to expose them to a different video, just do it. You'll have to suffer a meltdown, but they'll survive (though it will seem like you won't!). Maybe call the time "TV time" and say the Cars movie is tired, so they'll have to pick something else, and offer a couple choices. Save Cars for one or two days a week.
My 2 1/2-year-old son also loves Cars, but we don't put the movie in for him to watch too often, so he still gets excited when we do play it. Be thankful that they are asking for the movie they already have, instead of asking for the 150 million that are out that they DON'T have! (no way of affording that, for us!) (He also just *has* to watch The Young and the Restless with me every day that I'm watching it; I guess because there is a little boy named Noah on it, and my Noah loves watching him.)
We have a few of the Cars toys, and also a lot of other different toy cars that he plays with. Maybe you can turn the movie into an "especially good behavior day" movie! Or save it for the times when you really need that hour and a half to get a project or cooking done, especially during the holidays.
Rest assured, this is NORMAL behavior for ANY 2-3 year old! (Been there already with my now 16-year-old.)
Going thru this the 2nd time around,
~J.~
