Side Affects with Mirena IUC??

I had the mirena put in about 3.5 months ago. At first I had cramping, bleeding, and moodiness but all the side affects went away within a few weeks. I was thrilled because after my first child I had tried a different iud and the cramps were too intense to tolerate so i had it removed. Now suddenly in the last week or so I have been feeling nauseous on and off all day and coming close to throwing up, sensitive to smells and foods, and moody. Basically I feel pregnant, which is close to impossible, and a urine test at my docs yesterday confirmed that i am not prego. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced these side affects with the mirena? If so did they onset after so many months like this, and did they go away??

What can I do next?

Hi there,

I too had symptoms similar to yours. I was thinking that that Mirena had failed and that I was pregnant! But, I did get my period and knew that I wasn't. (My periods have become lighter and lighter but last longer unfortunately.) I think I may have had two cycles where I had those symptoms but haven't had them since. Good luck!

Hi - I'm sorry I can't actually help you with this one, although I do also have the Mirena (for the 2nd time) and haven't experienced anything like that. I too had the cramping & bleeding in the very beginning, but it went away and then it was like I didn't even know it was there. Have you spoken with your doctor/midwife about your symptoms? Have you been on the pill before? I ask about the pill b/c the Mirena releases a slight bit of hormone, so I am wondering if you are particularly sensitive to it?? I would talk with your doc about it all and give it a little time. If things don't change and you're able to determine that the Mirena is in fact the root of the issue, you might need to find another method of birth control?? Best of luck!

Have you had your thyroid levels tested? I have a slight case of hypothyroidism. My big symptoms were nausea, fatigue and moodiness until I began taking synthetic thyroid hormone. When I became pregnant and suffered from morning sickness (aka morning, noon and night sickness!), I was surprised at how similar the symptoms were to hypothyroidism.

Oh, and I have the Mirena and haven't had any side effects.

Best of luck!

Mirena has a whole host of side effects that are not fully disclosed by the company by way of generalization or glossing over. So, yes all of these things you are feeling could be side effects of your Mirena. And the side effects of the Mirena often manifest around the 3 month mark, and can take up to 3 months to go away once the device is removed. In my case I experienced side effects 3 weeks after insertion and they went away three weeks after removal - so there's a lot of variation. My side effects did not go away while I was using the IUC which is why I had it replaced with the non-hormone copper IUD. But I have friends who had side effects that did subside and go away and are very happy with their Mirena.

A lot of doctors and healthcare professionals do not recognize or acknowledge many of the side effects caused by Mirena. Mine did not and in the end the IUC was clearly the cause of the severe side effects I was experiencing, but it took over a year and a half to get it recognized. In the meantime my Dr told me she did not know what was causing my symptoms and we just kept treating them until I got a tip that it could be the IUC and I had it removed, eliminating the problems within weeks.
