I'm looking into getting the Mirena insert and was just wondering what other women's experiences with it are.
Well I decided to go for it. I had it put in on Friday. The procedure was simple and short, which was good because it hurt. I felt fine for about an hour afterwards and then I started having back pains like I was in the early stages of labor again. It lasted for about 8 hrs and has since been nothing but normal back pain. I say normal because I have nerve damage from the epidural and deal with back pain on a daily basis. So far I am very happy, the only thing I dislike is having to wear pads for the spotting.

I literally just had mine removed the day you posted this request. I had Mirena in for a little less than a month, it took 3 different Mirenas before it could be propertly inserted (my doctor said he's never heard of or experienced this before). I had severe bleeding for 2 days after insertion (going throug a pad and tampon every hour), and then a two-week long period (or at least that's what I thought it was). My doctor had me come in for a follow up, and it turned out that the Mirena had actually pierced and lodged itself inside my uterine wall. He had to do an ultrasound to find it, then called in a second doctor to confirm what he was seeing, and then promptly removed it. No more Mirena for me. I'm still bleeding from the injury it caused, and hopefully there's been no permanent damage. But it hurts like nobody's business right now. Back to the pill for me. :)
I just had mine taken out last week after 6 months. While I loved not having a period, I didn't love the extra weight gain, acne, and smelly discharge. My doctor says 98 percent of her patients have no complaints but after surfing the internet for feedback I found I was not alone in my symptoms. :/
Hi L.,
I have had it for 4 years and I love it. No side effects, except I barely get a period (sometimes I do not even know if I had one for the month). The doctor also says that it is helpful against one of the cancers (maybe uterine or ovarian, I do not remember). I recommend it.

There have been other posts on Mirena here, and by the end you'll have some women that love it and some that hate it.
Personally, I love Mirena. I had about 2 months of spotting in the beginning, but afterwards my periods were either super light or non-existant. I don't have the mood swings I typically had on the pill. I love not having to remember to take a pill every day. The only downside is that occasionally DH can feel the string, but that can be adjusted by how it's cut.
Other women have complications, but that is unique to their body and situation. The vast majority of Mirena users are very happy with their decisions.
What it boils down to is there is no one ideal birth control for every woman. I'd recommend trying it; I recommend it to all my friends and family. If it works for you, great! If not you'll find something else.
Hi L.,
I too had a bad experience with Mirena. I had spotting the first three months and then no period. I had similar feelings to some of the other moms on here. Moody, no energy etc. Sometimes I felt as if I was crawling out of my skin. My doctor said that I must be battling depression and gave me a prescription which intensified the feelings I had. I got off of the pills and the next week I had my first period in three years! After that I was back to normal. I felt like myself again. When I had Mirena inserted it really hurt me, so I was afraid of having it removed. Stupidly since I felt better, I decided to wait until it expired to have it removed. When my symptoms returned the second time, I rushed in to have it removed.
Now I am back on the pill which I am not too fond of either, but atleast I am no longer a moody, impatient stranger with little or no energy.
The convenience of Mirena was a great until all of the side effects became a much bigger inconvenience.
Good luck.

Hi, I had the Mirena 9 weeks after my first child was born. It made it's way through my uterus and had to be surgically removed.
I got a Mirena after my second Son. I was so nervous about the procedure I was contemplating not getting it. I am SOOO glad I went through with it. It is the BEST!!! I absolutly LOVE it!!! It is the best birth control method I have ever tried. Another plus is it is really cost effective!!
I just it now for a year. It seems okay. At the beggining is a little unconffortable but you get use to. This is the first time I use anticonceptives. It didn't make me depress.
I hope this help. Ask the nurses in the ofice if they use it.
I love it, I actually got pregnant on the pill so after I had my daughter I decided to try Mirena. I have had it since July and the only problem I have had is a little spotting for a couple of months, other than that's great I love it. It is great not having to remember to take the pill everyday!
I got it a few months ago after my baby was born. Just a little cramping during incertion and then about a month of breakthrough bleeding (all I needed was a panty liner all day & night). I did hear one person tell me that hers came out right after being put in.
I don't have Mirena but have the 10 year non hormonal IUD - it hurt when it was inserted and there was some cramping a few days after - for the first year I had a heavy period - I've had it in for over 3 years and love not having any extra hormones in my bed along with excellent birth control
L.,
I had the Mirena and my experience was very good. I had no side effects or cramping during monthly periods. I also had just spotting during my periods for maybe a day or two. The only thing is take the day off the day you have it put in, it does cause cramping for that day and it can be worse than normal. I am currently pregnant (by choice), but would use it again after my pregnancy.
The responses I'm seeing are interesting. I've had it in since last April, but I haven't really had any problems. I'm using it mostly because my periods were too long/too frequent.
I did have bad cramping for the first week or so, and after that I've had a period probably every two months or so but they're incredibly light, even though they last 5 or so days.
I haven't noticed any acne or mood changes. Weight gain is hard for me to say because I've been trying to gain weight (long story).
Best of luck!
I did not have a good experience with Mirena.
It was not put in correctly, making sex w/ my husband very uncomfortable.
Then it got lost in me (scary) and an ultrasound had to be done to locate it.
I'll never get Mirena again...
I had a Mirena "installed" 15 months ago. I have had no problems with it. When it was put in felt like a hard pinch but nothing truly painful. I did have cramps for a few days after however after that it has been smooth sailing. My periods are very lite now (sometimes only spotting for a day or so) with hardly any cramps or PMS. I have heard lots of stories that go from one extreme to another. I could not take birth control pills as they REALLy messed with my emotions however the Mirena gets an A+ from me. My advice, try it and see if its right for you. It can very easily be removed.
LOVED IT!! I never had any side effects. Plus not having a period was a TOTAL BONUS!! :)
Hi L. - I had a good friend who just had it removed because she was bleeding constantly and consequently developed cysts. On the other hand, my sister-in-law also has it and she has never had any problems so I am sure it varies woman to woman. I don't know if this helps much but I just wanted to share the information I had about it with you.
Best Wishes,
L.
I've had mine for over a year and love, love it! It was a bit painful going in...but worth it! I've had no side effects and recommend it!
I had the Mirena for about 2 yrs. Loved it at first, but did not have a period in that whole time and that messed with my body. Bloated, moody, weight gain, no energy. In other words constant PMS with no period to relieve it. But I have friends who LOVE it, so everyone's body is different. Someone else posted a very similar request (about IUD's in general I think) a few days ago so try to look that up. She may have gotten some useful responses too)
L.,
I had my Mirena put in last November after my daughter was born in August. My dr. gave me some pain meds to take before, so it didn't hurt at all. So far its been great, there was a lot of spotting for at least a month after, but now its seems great. I have 2 friends who had theirs put in around the same time as me, with similar experiences. I'm appreciating not worrying about taking a pill every day, and not paying for a perscription or worring about BC until my little one starts school! Good luck.
L.,
I had the Mirena for three years, I gave it my all! I didi not like it. I bled more (for weeks at a time!), I cramped more, and I wasmore moody. Not a good combination! Anyhow, some people really love it, but it did not work for me!
Good luck,
M.
I had it inserted after my 2nd child. I really liked it and had no trouble with it. Then after having it in for four years, I got pregnant. Needless to say, I was very surprised. After I had the baby, the doctor looked for the IUD but they surmised that it had fallen out without me knowing it. I now have the essure procedure where inserted two titanium/nickle springs into my fallopian tubes to create scar tissue and permanently seal off my tubes. Good luck to you with whatever you choose.
i have had the Mirena since October 2008. I LOVE it!! it was painful when inserted and i was a little uncomfortable for a few days but worth it 100%
I am extremely glad i did it!
Good Luck!
I get cervical cancer...so I can never never ever use Mirena, and ditto for birthcontrol pills. LOVE iud's though...have the copper kind.
No one ever told me in the 10 years that I had abnormal paps (1st abnormal, 2nd fine, repeat ad naseum), that low grade/high grade dysplasia is spurred on/made worse by taking hormones ... When my OB/surgeon was telling me about it when I was pregnant (and went into full-on cancer for the first time), she was disgusted. Said that many docs (male and female) consider pregnancy to be the bigger "risk" and so keep quiet about it...even to their patients that they're treating WITH dysplasia.
This delve into the personal is nothing "bad" about Mirena...just that it's a HUGE health risk IF you happen to be like me
I had Mirena inserted after I had my second son. I was still nursing him at 18 months old, and needed birth control that would not compromise my breastfeeding. The Mirena worked great for me for 4 years, and then I had it removed because we wanted to have another baby. I had the Mirena removed in July, and was pregnant by November. I would definitely advise you to try it!!
I had mine put in after my second child. That was 3 yrs ago I love it for not having to remember any kind of birth control , but i havn't had a period in three years also; and for me i think i may take it out before the 5 yrs because i think the hormone imbalance in me is making me crazy (not having the period and all) ... other than the first few days of cramping and the first 3-4 months of my body trying to get use to it ( flutters and slight cramps) It is worth it if you know your forgetful and active. But remember every body is different and other people have bad reactions.. Good luck in you choice and research..
I do not have personal experience with Mirena, I am beyond all that. I did look up "mirena side effects" and several sites popped up. THe first was the company's official site which I ignored. I picked out a blog started by a woman who some problems. There is a link to a Care2 petition for more disclosure. I think it is worth a look. Not all women have these issues, but is the risk worth it to you? You definitely have the right to full disclosure.

I did not have a good experience with Mirena, I was very very moody and I became somewhat depressed (if you google it you can find blogs with woman having issues with it) - I have been a different person since I have had it removed! I think it effects everyone differently - good luck!
