Samsung Tablet Left in the Rain

Yes, you read that right. I am livid right now! Earlier this year my son bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 with saved birthday and Christmas $. Apparently he took it outside yesterday and I didn't know it. He also forgot to bring it inside. It rained today. My step daughter just found it...wet. Is there any saving it? Anything I can do?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the responses. It was my 7 year old's tablet. We went to the store and he bought some rice, so now we just have to wait and see. I will admit, I didn't handle the situation as graciously as I should have. I didn't punish him, but he was well aware I was upset. I do agree that punishment isn't the solution, and if the tablet doesn't work, that is the natural consequence. He's anxiously waiting to see if the rice works. I'll probably keep it in there at least until Sunday evening. I called Samsung to see if they had any suggestions, and while I was on the phone and distracted by someone at the door, his older brother took it off the counter and turned it on. I know that is a HUGE no no when electronics are wet, but it did turn on and I quickly powered it off. So there is a little hope it'll work.

If he bought it with his own saved money I wouldn't punish him for it. Hopefully you will get it to work with the rice trick, if not and it's beyond repair, then there is the natural consequence of his actions. Good luck.

big bag of rice
I have drowned my Iphone twice - dried it out in rice and turned it back on.

Yes, it's possible. Do not turn it on. I've read to save phones and this seems similar to put it, completely covered in rice. Google how to save a wet tablet or call Samsung. A local dealer may be able to help.

Also consider if it was not lying on or in water all it may need is to be wiped off and allowed to dry in air for a few days. Can you open it?

Put it in uncooked rice for a few days! My friend did that and it worked. Good luck!

I understand being frustrated at your son's irresponsible behavior, but he certainly feels the pain even more since he's the one who paid for it. Losing the item is a consequence in and of itself. Vent to us, but try not to come down hard on him -- that will get in the way of any learning he may gain from the experience. Try to be empathetic (I'm sure you've accidentally ruined something valuable in your life) and he will know that you're on his side and he will be more likely to direct any frustration at himself (whereas he might misdirect it at you if you get angry with him).

I have heard rice works for drying electronics, but I've never tried it myself. I did accidentally submerge my phone in water once. I took it apart (I took the battery out and let it COMPLETELY dry -- took several days) and it did work after that. However, it was 10 years ago before they were as fancy as they are now.

I would be angry too, but if he bought it with his own saved birthday and Christmas money it's his problem not yours. Don't work harder on HIS problem than he is. I would be very sympathetic and tell him you hate that for him and ask him what he thinks the next step is. If it's trying the rice dry, he would be buying the rice. He would also be researching the possible solution for his carelessness and paying a computer store to look at it if that's the answer. I would try my best not to lecture or rant.

I don't think I would punish in this scenario. The lesson of a ruined item that he saves for should be enough.

So sorry some lessons are hard. I feel the same way about my kids electronic stuff. I purchased iPods and told them both if they were damaged or lost I would hate it for them but it would be their responsibility to fix whatever the issue was. My daughter got hers for her 11th birthday and it is in pristine condition.

Blessings!

Well, I hope he gets a repercussion about it?

Once, our laptop got water on it.
Long story how it happened. But it was not our kids fault, but another kid.
Anyway, a bit of water from a fallen cup, got on it.
We did the rice thing and everything.
It was ruined.
This was a $1200 laptop.
It was fried.

I am guessing this is the 5 year old??? He is a little young, but rather be mad at him, let him know you are disappointed in how he cared for his expensive item. If you are going to do a punishment of some sort, I suggest making him work toward the purchase of a new one. Otherwise, it was his money and he lost a very expensive item.

I tried to rice-rescue a phone that went in a pool. I got it dry enough to do some things, but it never really worked again. I ended up having to replace it.

See, it happens to adults too.
