Roller Skates

My 3 1/2 year old son has been asking for roller skates ever since we took him roller skating for the first time. He is DEFINATELY not an expert, but he did pretty well (for his first try). I would like to get him some skates for Christmas, but I am clueless. Can anyone give me some ideas. I am not sure if the ones that go over the shoes (which are the kind he used at the skating rink) are best for beginners and young children or if the ones that are boots themselves are better. Also, if you have any suggestions on specific ones that would be great! He wears about a size 9 1/2 shoe so I am a little hesitant to get some of the over the shoe pairs because they only go up to size 10 shoe. Anyway, any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Hi Allison,
I bought my daughter a pair of skates at walmart. They where learners. The start off as the basic skate and then as they get better at skating you can adjust the wheels to make them inline skates. I belive they have both over the shoe and boot skates. I hope that helps. and as previously posted always helmets and safety pads... :)

I think you can find some play ones at target or toys r us.. i know more sturdy ones you can get at Dicks sporting goods - and probably find coupons all over.. Elbow, knee pads and helmets.. - hope you have tile floors

HI A., I bought both of my kids at Good Will and they were roller blades, not skates. They were practically new and only like $6. Don't forget the helmet, knee and elbow pads! Good luck and happy skating!

Just an FYI when I was younger and first learning to skate on regular skates staying on the carpet of the rink kept me from going to fast and was much softer to fall on. Once I got my balance I would adventure onto the rink floor by holding onto the wall. Good luck.

OK, I'm not exactly an expert, but with my kids it was easier to learn with the old-fashioned boot type. You can get a pretty cheap pair at Target or a Sports Authority type place. You can also find some at the Goodwill. Usually when they're that young you can find some that are hardly used thanks to the growth rate of kids. I hit the Goodwill for my kids first pairs. Once I knew they were going to stick with it, I bought a good pair the next go round. I wouldn't spend more than 25$ or 30$ though. Good luck and have fun.
