Riding Boots

My husband got me 4 horseback riding lessons as a gift, but the instructor won't let me ride again without riding boots! How much do boots typically cost? I don't know if I will continue with the lessons after the initial 4 (especially since the instructor is so strict! All I want to do is ride, not star in a rodeo). I don't want to invest a lot of money in boots that I may rarely use.

What can I do next?

You can probably just get a pair of $100 or less Ropers at your local Cavenders or the like. I think there is one in N. Dallas, off 6-35 & Welch area?

I took lessons last year & after nearly wrenching my leg out of socket a few times getting my tennis shoes stuck in the stirrups, I came to LOVE my boots. I was raised in Texas & never had a pair until last year...it was a big deal!

Have fun!

I used to teach lessons, and we just required them to wear some kind of boot with a heel. We weren't picky or specific about the type. I actually always wore hiking boots, I think I paid about $20-30 for them at Wal Mart. See if they'll let you do something like that.

I am surprised they are requiring you to have riding boots. I gave lessons and we did require a boot with a heel, but it didn't have to be riding boots. Tennis shoes are dangerous when riding as your foot could slide all the way through the stirrup and get hung up in a fall. A heel helps prevent this. There is a consignment place called "bits and pieces", but I don't have any info for them. You might try searching for it in local businesses on yahoo or something. Otherwise, depending on where you live, if you need western type boots there are several western stores- Cavenders, Western Warehouse, the Justin Outlet is in Justin- they usualy have irregulars pretty cheap. If you ned English, I'm not sure locally where there is an English place- the one big one I knew of closed! Petsmart with the horse stuff sometimes has boots.
Good Luck.

Wow! I used to teach and I never heard of an instructor requiring boots for beginners! Are you learning English or Western style? You can get some cheap western boots at any of the western wear stores (beware, the cheapest ones aren't always pretty!) But if you need English style, boots you are probably going to have to to a specialty store and they'll be a bit pricier.
