Progesterone Injections

Has anyone had progesterone injections while you were pregnant. OUCH - they hurt; even with each step I take my butt muscle hurts! lol My husband gave me my injection this morning and it gushed blood. Apparently it is common from time to time. But anyways, are there any secrets in keeping it less painful, before AND after the injection?

What can I do next?

I did my shots myself during my IVF pregnancy. My husband did them for 10 days during the first failed round and I expected him to do them during the second (successful) round but he was out that first night so I figured out how to inject my own hip and it was a lot less painful. I remember the nurse teaching him to gently squeeze the skin with one hand while popping the shot in with the other. When I did them myself, I had to stretch the skin a bit instead and that was less painful. Icing after helps, and make sure the oil is body temperature before you draw the injection. Very few of my dozens of injections bled but it did happen every now and again.

Good luck...this part sucks but it will pass soon.

I did them during both surrogacies. The PIO shots got to be a pain in the butt...literally.

Here's what I did: draw up the medication. Lay in bed and put an ice pack on your bare skin. Wait till the area is completely numb. Put the needle in, slowly inject the PIO. When I was done, I sat on the heating pad and rubbed the area to get the oil to break up so my body can absorb it.

I never once had it gush blood. If it did, that means you hit a blood vessel. You're gonna have a bruise pretty bad.

Alternate cheeks :o) Also the pain decreases with time. I always had my OB do them.

My insurance covered a visiting nurse to give me the shots, since my hubby was too chicken to do it. Maybe yours will too? Not saying that this is your hubby's fault, cause they do hurt! But I never had them bleed more than a few drops. Definitely alternate sides and go with the ice. It is a thick liquid so will definitely hurt and must be given slowly.

Best of luck!

My husband says he might be pushing the progesterone in too fast. You have to go slow and steady.
He gave his ex-wife progesterone shots for 5 IVF rounds and NEVER had it bleed.... so not sure why that happened. I would call the nurse back, because in your hip/tushie there isn't anywhere for blood to gush.

We had our son through IVF and I self injected once a day up through the first trimester.
My husband was glad I was ok with giving myself the shots because he would have been a nervous wreck if he had to do it.
It wasn't too bad for me although I knew some women who had a horrible time with it.
I just switched thighs every day and tried to vary the location so I wouldn't have one area that was more tender than any other.
Maybe your husband is giving you the shot a little lower than he should.
The spot(s) for your behind should be just slightly lower than your hip level on your back side over to one side or the other.
He needs to do a short jab, not stab.
Maybe a nurse can observe his technique and give him a few pointers.
Another thing you can try is to ice the site before the shot then apply a heating pad afterward.

I have had them bleed a lot. I figured my husband hit a little vein or something. Sometimes I had to put a bandaid on the spot. There were also times when he hit a nerve and it would send me through the roof. I knew it before he actually injected so I made him back it out and use a different spot. One thing I know, had I not had them my youngest wouldn't be here. At one point our local lab messed up the blood work and I had to wait a few days longer to find out how much of an injection I need. I began to cramp and had some pretty serious contractions going on before we got it figured out. I ended up getting injections for the entire pregnancy. Not fun but worth it!!!

Make sure he is giving you the shot slow and steady. The solution is very thick and if it goes in to fast it will leave a bruise and large lump. I've never had blood gush so you might want to ask the doctor about that. I also found that if I gave them in my thigh and not my butt it didn't hurt as much. You could try icing the area before and after the injection to numb the area and to keep swelling down if you are having a bad reaction at the injection site.

Hurting means the needle hit a nerve. I don't know if this is possible but perhaps you could ask the nurse where a less sensitive spot is located.
