I took them for both my children. The only side effect I had was how "messey" it was if you inserted it vs. taking orally.
Good luck!
Hi! My doctor has been treating me for PCOS the last 6 months and I have conceived! Ive taking clomid for a couple cycles as well and was informed that once I did become pregnant that I may have to take progesterone supplements for the first 10 weeks. I was wondering if any of the moms have gone through this and what the side effects were and what all was involved in this process!! thanks for all the help/advice!

If you are taking the suppositories, I would do them a night. Wear a pad too. I actually wore one all day and night. You get alot of discharge from them.
I just got done a few weeks ago w/ them. After 2 miscarriages my OB felt this would help. It did! And I have PCOS too. I took femara though, 4 cycles on clomid never stuck.
Hi M.,
Congratulations! The progesterone supplements are just to counteract the estrogen dominance most moms experience while having PCOS. It's a hormone naturally present in a woman's body. It's also meant to be up during pregnancy. So, they're just doing what your body has been unable to do on its own. Happy Pregnancy, S.
Hi M.,
You can use natural progesterone from the health food store. It is called wild yam cream. Since it is a cream you just apply it to the body and it gets into the bloodstream much faster. I have used it and highly recommend it. Go to your health food store to ask questions...that is what I always do when I have a question, they are wonderfully helpful. Another source I have had for many years is the website www.mercola.com This site is Dr. Mercola He is both a MD and has studied extensively in natural remedies.
Best to you,
C.
I took prometrium, which is progesterone. It made me very very sick! LOL It makes first trimester prego symptoms worse, like nausea, constipation, headaches, extreme fatigue, etc. but it worked for us and helped me maintain my pregnancy! Good luck and congrats!
Hi M.,
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
We concieved on our first IVF cycle and were instructed to take Estradial and Progesterone supplements. The Progesterone I took was administered as an IM (intra-muscular) injection daily, on your upper, outer buttox. There are other ways of administering, by suppository and a new vaginal gel, I'm sure your doc will discuss and decide which is best for you. I was scared to death at first, that huge needle is going into my tiny bottom! I did almost all my hormone injections for our IVF cycles and didn't like not being in control. My injection site would be sore and "lumpy" feeling for a couple of days, so we needed to move them around. As far as side effects go, I didn't notice anything I could specifically pin on the added Progesterone. I think the pregnancy hormones do enough to challenge your emotional and physical balance!
Best wishes for a happy and healthy pregnancy,
L. P.
22 weeks today with twin girls!!
I took prometrium to maintain a pregnancy.
I thought it was like taking a sleeping pill. from the first pill - within 20 or 30 minutes I was walking around in a fog and ready for a nap.
I was supposed to take 4 pills a day.. 2 in the am and 2 in the pm.. I never could take that much.
I cant remember if I took 2 at night or 1 am and 1 pm.. but it made me very very tired.
but i did get used to it and then it wasnt so bad.
-- my baby was born healthy on her due date. the progestone is thought to be quite safe for mom and baby.
With my last pregnancy my doctor also recommended that I take vaginal progesterone supplements. I was very leary about it and did some research.. There are chances (very small) of it affecting the baby's reproductive organs and small chance of it making you hold on to a pregnancy that may have been meant to miscarry. However a lot of people do take it and I know that everything is usually just fine. In my case, I had been on Clomid for almost a year and had a early miscarriage during that time. So when I got pregnant this time he suggested it and I declined and told him that I'd take my chances - basically my instincts told me that I didn't need it. The pregnancy went fine, my 2nd baby girl was just born 10/31/08. So its up to you, do your research and do what makes you feel more comfortable :) Good Luck and Congratulations :)
Hi M.,
I use to use a progesterone cream. However, I found out that progesterone is very hard to duplicate, naturally. What happened to me was I found lumps in my breast. So I immediately stopped using it and threw it away. Since then, I have not had any lumps in my breasts.
So I what I do is: use a non-GMO soy protein which has helped me tremendously, food based vitamins, borage seed oil (very beneficial for women of all ages), and organic fish oils (these do not contain mercury).
Getting the body in balance and giving it great nourishment will help with your progerstone levels.
Also progestin is the synthetic version of progesterone. Did you know that? So just a word of caution.
If you would like to talk and find out which brand I use, call me at ###-###-####.

Yes! I did progesterone in the first trimester for all three kids! The first were suppositories (the worst!) and the second two were shots in alternating hips every week. It was no fun, but worth every bit of inconvenience. I don't recall any side effects at all. Good luck - I did the clomid thing too and then did progesterone and it all worked out fine.
We did IVF and got P/G with twins. I used a vaginal suppository for the first 12 weeks. Fine - no injections and no obvious side effects, although it was a bit messy. My 2 are now 7 years old....!
Hi! I have PCOS as well and went thru 2 years of clomid and 5 years of shots with IUI. I eventually went thru IVF and got pregnant the first time :) I had to take progesterone shots in my upper "back side" for 12 weeks. I had to inject myself as my husband traveled so much. I was on a high dose due to the PCOS, IVF and fact that I was prego with twins :) I did not feel sick at all, but my face became a bit bloated. I didn't gain any additional weight with the injections and once I was able to stop the progesterone, I lost the bloating in my face. I was not sick at all during my pregnancy. Congrats to you and your family!!
Hi M.,
I used progesterone suppositories during the first 12 weeks of my pregnancy. I had a miscarriage prior, so the doc. recommended it. Everything went fine, no side effects other than a bit of leaking from the suppository. I just wore a panty liner.
I have taken progesterone twice each time for 10 week periods to maintain pregnancies. I took 1 shot everyday; it has the same side effects as pregnancy. The shot was painful for me since it is a thick liquid that is slow going in; my husband gave them to me. Let me know if you want to know more about my experiences with this.
Yes, I am currently taking progesterone three days after a positive ovulation test and will have to continue for 10 weeks after I get a positive pregnancy test. First, congrats on your positive pregnancy!! The progesterone I am on is called Prometrium. It is a vaginal insert that is taken 2 times a day. It is not a big deal and there isn't any side effects that I am aware of. You just need to wear a panty liner after you put it in because you will have a little discharge from the pill casing. My nurse advised me that the pill "melts" inside your vagina and your body absorbs the medicine, but the outside casing of the pill will be discharged. It is not bad and easy to do.
Hi M.,
My doctor suggested that I take progesterone suppositories last year when I was newly pregnant with my son. My progesterone levels were borderline low. My gynocologist is a fertility specialist. So, even though I didn't have fertility issues, they ran tests that they do for all their patients. Most doctors don't check for progesterone levels, however, some miscarriages occur because of low progesterone.
I did not experience any side effects to the suppositories beside the inconvenience of taking them. They need to be kept in the refrigerator, so if you travel, you need to keep them cool. Also, I had to go to the doctor's office twice a week to get give blood to get my levels checked. Other than that, they were pretty harmless.
Congratulations on your pregnancy!
