Hi K.,
They always tell me to take the card out for more than 30 seconds and push the red re start button. If that doesn't work you may need a new receiver? Give them a call they are usually pretty helpful. Good luck!
Last night we were watching tv and we got a "searching for satellite error 771a" message. We unplugged it and plugged it back in and then went to bed. This morning, all we have is a grey screen with no message at all. The only thing we can do is access the programs that we already had recorded. Has this happened to anyone else, and what was the solution?
Thanks for the responses! As I was on the phone with tech support, they ran a test and I was asked if we were experiencing high winds. When I said no, she was confused and was looking up our account info to see if a service call would be covered. Service just magically appeared, and neither of us knew what happened! Oh well, it all worked out.

I'd call them if the first suggestion doesn't work. They've always been able to walk me thru my issues.
Sounds like you need a new receiver. If that is the case, watch all the DVR stuff first. When you switch receivers, you lose all of your programing. Also, do you have protection plan? If so you service call and the box will be covered as mine was, but if not, I was told I would of had to pay for both. They only came out to me after they talked me through 5 or 6 different options. Their customer service is great, one of the reasons we stay with them, give them a call.
sounds like your receiver is dead. call 800-DIRECTV and tell them the message and what you have done.
They will send out a new receiver within 3 to 5 days. This is from my personal experience as one of my receivers just died last week. I had a new receiver in 3 days. This is a NORMAL HD receiver it is NOT a DVR..
have you tried to pull the access card out and reboot it?
