Probably TMI, My 11/2 Year Old Has a "Digging" Issue

Ok, My one and half year old daughter can not keep her hands out of her diaper! Especially in the last couple of months. It doesn't matter if she has a dirty diaper of not, her hand are messing around down there. I know that it is normal for her to be curious about "down there", but I'm really getting tired of cleaning poop out of her finger nails. And there are sometimes that she gets it all over herself and anything she touches. Any ideas? I've tried just making sure that she has pants on or a onesie at all times, but she always figures a way to get her hands all gross.

What can I do next?

Hi N.,
I have the same problem with my 2 yr old boy. I put onesie's on him, but now that it is way too hot for that, I have him wash his hands everytime I catch him , and that gets old for him. Hopefully that helps, it's going to take awhile but she will end up stopping!

pinworms. my homeopath said that if you have pets, your kids most likely do have them and if they are in daycare or around other kids a lot, they get them from the other kids very easily. there are OTC remedies you can take or there is homeopathic remedy for it, Cena. The homeopath told me to give it to my kids 3 times in the morning and 3 times in the evening in the 3 days before the new moon and full moon. She said to do it for 3 months. The lunar cycle has something to do with the mom pinworm laying eggs. There is lots of info on the internet about it if you do a search. You will also have to wash sheets, blankets, pajamas and wipe down toys and other items that the child comes into contact with. Not to mention always hand washing before eating and after using the bathroom. Everyone in the household has to be treated for it, too.

Hello N., Your daughter may be using this method to get extra attention since you are so busy with the twins. She finds that you have to pay attention to just her when she does this behavior. So try to ignor her, no talking or looking at her while you deal with this issue(the clean up). Look for the times when her hand in NOT down there and gush over her then with lots of praise and privliges. Sibling rivalry can be a good thing if you can learn to use it to your advantage. Good luck.

Maybe she is ready to start potty training.

She very likely could have an infection that is bothering her. Please check into it. If this proves to not be the case, however, now might be a good idea to start potty training. I can't imagine that it feels that great having a diaper full of poo! Teaching her some words or sign language to communicate to you about the ucky poo might help. She obviously knows that sticking her hands in it gives her attention! If you teach her a key word that she can use or a sign she can use to communiate, she might stop using her hands to investigate it herself.

My son does this two and I try to keep on top of all the diapers, and make sure he always has pants on. If you get any good responses can you pass them on to me. I would like help with this issue. He has sensitive skin so giving him an extra bath every time he does this (so far it's only been a few times)might get bad for his skin.

We have a problem with our 2 year old digging in his diaper at nap time. Onesies worked for a little while, but then he started to get his hand down his pants, in the leg of the onesie and into the diaper. Now at naptime we put a belt on him just tight enough to make it too hard for him to get his whole arm in his pants. I would suggest going tot he DR, if there is no health issue, try pants with belt loops and a belt.

My daughter had a similar problem when she was in daycare... I put her in onesies, then she couldn't get into her diaper.

Dear N. M.,

Have you taken your daughter to the doctor to find out if she has a yeast infection and it itches in her vagina? We have been raising our granddaughter many years and when she was in 2nd grade she kept saying vagina one day. The social worker called us and we took her to see the doctor and it turned out that she had a yeast infection so her vagina was on her mind all the time because it itched so badly. She has ADHD and does not always verbalize things in a socially-acceptable manner.

Sometimes what our kids do/say gives us an idea of what is going on even if they don't know the right way to do it.

She may have pinworms. The anus gets overwhelmingly itchy at times. My son had the same problem so I looked online and a website told me to take a piece of scotch tape and put it right on her anus in the morning BEFORE you wipe to change the diaper. Then put the tape in a bag trying to keep it free of sticking to the sides, and take it to your ped and they will look under a microscope. I guess the female comes out and lays eggs (usually at night) around the anus causing itching. I believe it was the sandbox that did it because once he was treated, I disinfected the sand in his sandbox and put a cover on it. Look it up and see if the shoe fits. . .

Probably nothing but my kids once got pinworms from another family, and that makes them scratch their rectal area. If you pull down the back of her diaper in the dark at night and, with a flashlite, look at her rectal area, you can see them. As I recall they are little white, threadlike sqiggly things. The doctor would give you oral meds and everyone in the family has to take it - so much according to their weight. At least, that's how they used to do it.

If it's her vaginal area she's scratching, she might have yeast and as far as I know, you can use monistat for that, but your doctor will know for sure.
