Stinky Bottom Issues!

Ok, my 3 year old boy is potty trained - but he does wear a pull-up at night. The problem we are having is that his bottom can become very stinky!! He says it itches and then sticks his hand in his underware or pull-up (this happens most frequently at night) and then his fingers are stinky!!! He gets a bath every night before bed and this temporarily cures the problem, but by morning time his fingers are stinky again! And that is a difficult smell to scrub away! Has anyone dealt with this before? Any solutions to the stinky bottom (switch to wet wipes instead of toilet paper, baby powder, diet, etc)? Solutions for keeping my son's hands out of his pants? Any tips or advice would be much appreciated. I hate smelling my son's stinky hands first thing in the morning...it puts such a damper on an otherwise beautiful first morning hug!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for all of your advice! I hadn't considered some of those things and we definetly got them checked out. Luckily, he didn't have any problems and it was resolved by simply using wet wipes or flushable wipes when he did go to the potty!!! Thanks again!!!!

It sounds like his body is having a negative chemical reation to the pull ups. This is what happened with my son when he was little, too- but it was well before this age. He would get extreme sores on his bottom from the allergy. Once I finally found a brand of disposable diapers that wouldn't irritate him (Fitti) the problem went away.

Now, with my 3 yr old daughter, I am seeing similar issues... She has an odor too, but only in the AM after having a diaper on all night (she is "day" potty trained). I have found that bathing her in the morning after she wakes up gives her a bit more relief than bathing at night. I have even considered bathing her in the morning AND at night... Her brand is "Smiles" from Sam's Club.

As for the odor, I would suggest bathing in the morning, after he has had his diaper on all night, so as to eliminate the negative affects of the chemical combination.

I had to chuckle but I feel your pain. Huggies, Pampers and other brands have flushable wipes. I would have him using those. I actually use them myself because they make me feel cleaner.

It sounds like he may be dealing with a yeast problem. Try a probiotic and see if this helps.

Make sure he doesn't have worms. You don't think about it this day and time, but if he plays in the dirt or has a dog or cat he could have possibly gotten pin worms. That would cause his bottom to itch.

Boys do love putting their hands down their pants. They just learn to be more descreat about it as they grow up. Wet wipes with a light scent will help a bunch and you can just have a pop-up container by the bed, actually I would put one by his bed and yours also. Try to encourage him to wipe his hands when he gets up in the morning 1st thing before leaving his room and toss it in a cute little waste basket in his room. All of our children bathe each day, but one of our younger ones does have a more stinky bottom than the others. When they make the last trip to the bathroom before going to bed, I encourage them to wipe with a wipey before bed so they wake up fresh. That helps also. You'll laugh about it in years to come.

Have you thought about some kind of infection? Yeast infections can happen just about anywhere that's moist and yes, even with boys. Try getting an over the counter ointment (next to the kits for yeast infections) and use a little a couple of times a day for a few days and see if that clears it up. If that doesn't, I'd take him to the dr just to check it out.

Good luck and blessings to your family,
Jenn

Hi C.,
Please have your pediatrician check him for pinworms. Sounds gross, I know, but it's far more common than most people know.
Growing up, my sister had pinworms on several occasions. I never got them. With my own 2 children, my son didn't get them & my daughter did. Same care, same playing areas, same bathing. Some are more susceptible than others. The cure is quite simple, but may need several tries. It used to be just one small tablet by mouth and that's it. Call your pediatrician. I was horrified when I discovered them in/on my daughter, and afraid to tell anyone. When I called the Dr., his nurse laughed and said she could relate. Her son had them repeatedly. I was so relieved-if it could happen to a nurse's child, then I was doing ok. Hope this helps.

I think it sounds like a possible yeast infection. I know you can buy just a regular kit that has a cream treatment, not the capsules, and put that on the area for a week. That is what the doctor has done for my kids. If that doesn't work I would check with a doctor.

I would say that it's not getting cleaned good enough after. If it only happens at night, I wonder if he has pinworms. They come out there at night and you can only catch them with a flashlight at night. I would think that would make you itch.

your son may have pinworms the way you can tell is to examine his bottom at night while he is sleeping if he has them you will see something that looks like little white threads crawling out his bottom. You can go on the net to learn more about this. Hope this helps.

I'm sorry...I'm laughing too. I have two boys 4 and 2, and I definitely know what you mean. We have always used wipes for bathroom duty (I don't use flushable b/c even those can be bad for your plumbing)...we just throw them in the trash (you can start with toilet paper and end with wipes). My husband and I usually bathe in the morning so if there's a stinky bottom in the house, they get to take a dip too! I have an extremely sensitive sense of smell, so I can't deal with that all day. It's gonna stink in the morning b/c it's been sitting in pee all night. And don't you know...boys never stop sticking there hands in the pants :-). Good luck.

Put tape on his rear at night then take it off in the morning and see if you see any worms.

I don't think this is severely harmful, but if you do see something put it in a ziploc bag and call his pediatrician.

That's the only thing I can think that may causing the overnight smell. Either that or bacteria growth. Whichever it is, you definitely don't want him to go "butt-to-mouth" in his sleep. Do this for one or two nights and see what you come up with.

Hi C.,
I know this is gross, but have you checked him for worms? If you take a stool sample in to the pediatrician they can check to see if he might have worms. It's not uncommon. And I remember my mom telling me that "back in the day" her mom would talk about night time being the worst for that-- maybe because kids are lying down at rest at that time or something, I don't know. But I've always remembered that. There is a reason why it's itching, though, and that is one possibility.

A C.,

Based on the info you've given. You may want to have your son checked for Pinworms. He is of that age where they get them in the sandbox etc. Usually the signs get worse at night. Causes a lot of itching. If you want to be sure, take him to his peditrician for an examination.
