My daughter just turned 2 yrs old in Aug. I would like to try and start potty training her. But with her being blind I am afriad of scaring her. I believe she understands What the potty is for because when she finds her way to the bathroom she will sit there and slap the toilet seat and say "pee". But when I put her on it she gets upset and wants off. Has anyone had to deal with this?

What can I do next?

hey Desire.
well i am going to tell you what i did. My son is blind from birth (ROP) due to prematurity. When we started the venture of potty training i was more scared then he was. I started around the same age and it continued until about 4!!!! I will tell you what worked for me. Go to walmart and get musical potty. the reg potty are not appealing because they cant see all the cute designs and characters. I also always sat on the floor with him while he was on the potty. When he would go the potty would start playing childrens melodies. he really liked it. actually when he got older he use to pour water in it to play.!! ha ha so imaginative. He is ten now and because of him being blind he actually sits and does the point down thing otherwise there is lots of cleaning up to do. For the potty training for the poo poo, we kept wondering how he would know he was finished cleaning back there. Well we kept baby wipes and he would use that first then the dry so that way he never is stinky! and he still uses the same system. There are so many things taht have to be improvised to our kids to keep them with a "regualar" childhood. If you met my son you wouldnt even know he is blind. He is all over the place. he uses his feet to tap sound into the air and the sounds bounce off whatevers around him and he rarely even bumps into things. He use to when he was younger! Also have you contacted your local school board to start recieving services? and the division of blind services? My son has been recieving BOTH agencies services since he was 6 months old. And have you applied for disability check for her! I would like to keep in touch with you.I love talking with other mom who have special children!

Personally, i think every child at one point or another is scared of the big potty/toilet, but it sounds like she understands the idea. Though i agree, start of with a small floor training potty, a musical one may be best for her because of her bllindness....and as with any child, most importantly, always talk to her about it and make sure that in that aspect, she understands there's nothing to fear. Good luck.

Hi! My brother is blind and I can remember him being afraid to sit on the big potty. I might be due to the height or feeling like they might fall. I could only suggest a little potty that sits on the floor instead of the big on until she feels safer.

I have no experience but I watched a documentary on Ray Charles. And its a good thing Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder were not raised in fear. Children even blind ones learn how to control there parents into getting their way. Don't treat her too blind. Research the great blind people and see their parents made them extremely independant. Hope that helps.
