Hi moms!!! I have found hundreds of play-doh recipes online and have only tried 3 as of today. All three are terrible! The play-doh is so sticky, you can't get it off your hands! My son is enjoying helping me make it but not in love with the final product... neither am I! Does anyone have a surefire recipe that I can use to make some play-doh? Thank you so much!!!

We have used this recipe for many, many years. If you would like to color it, add the coloring in with the water. It will be slightly sticky while it is still in the pot, but scoop it out onto parchment paper (or the counter)knead & roll it into a ball...it is finally ready to play with.

2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 c. Plain flour
1/2 c. salt
1 T. oil
1 cup of warm water

Put all liquids into a pot over medium heat & stir until warm, but not boiling. Add dry ingredients and stir until well mixed (maybe a slight ball forms) taking notice to incorporate all dry ingredients. Plop on the counter & knead away.

Warmly,
S.

Hi B.! I taught preschool and this was the recipe that I always used. It will make a large batch....so you can half it or just separate to make a few colors.

3 cups flour
1 cup salt
3 tbsp cream of tartar
3 tbsp oil
food coloring
3 cups water

Combine all ingredients
Cook over medium heat
(the play dough will thicken and become drier)
Take off the stove
Knead

B.,

I agree that the cooked playdough recipe using cream of tartar is the very best. You can buy Cream of Tartar a little cheaper at Smart and Final.

Here is a recipe I have used for almost 12 years now, I've never had it turn out bad....

you will need:
Heavy Pan
1 cup flour
1 cup water
1/4 cup salt
2 teaspons of cream of tartar
1 tablespoon cooking oil
food coloring

mix dry ingredients in heavy pan, add oil, water, food coloring. Cook approximatley 3 minutes, until water is absorbed and it pulls away from pan. Knead slightly as soon as its cool enough to handle.
If you want to make different colors at one time don't add the food coloring until you are ready to do the kneading. Divide the dough add a few drops of color and knead until color is mixed into the dough.

Hope this works for you!
J.

Just buy it! Play-doh is soooo cheap. You'll probably spend more money just buying the ingredients. I use to try to make my kids keep the colors seperate, but now that you can find play-doh for such a reasonable price (without the hastle of making it), I let them invent colors. Wow! A world of fun opened up for them. :)

I've used this recipe for over 10 years of pre-school teaching:

3 cups flour
1 cup salt
1/3 cup vegetable oil
colored water

Combine first 3 ingredients and gradually add water as needed, a little at a time.
If you pour in too much water, throw in more flour. Store in airtight container. Depending on weather-humidity or dryness-you may need to add more flour or water at the time of making it or over the next few uses. This last 2-3 weeks. Add extract or kool-aid for scented playdough. After you make it a few times, you'll get the hang of the consistancy you want.

Please let us know if any of the recipes here worked. I also got my recipe from our preschool and it works every time.

I hate the smell of store bought play-doh.

This is so easy to make and affordable and I can make so much of it easily!
