I've worked with children for 10 years now and have tried every recipe possible. I finally found the perfect one.
2 cup flour
1 cup salt
2 cup water
1 TBSP veg oil
2 TBSP cream of tartar
1 package unsweetened Kool-aid (any flavor)

DIrections:
Mix all ingredients together in a pot, cook over medium heat, stirring until a ball is formed. Knead the dough on a floured surface. Store in an air tight container.

It lasts about a month or so and it wont dry out as long as you store it in a baggy or tupperware. Good luck!

I like Kool Aid play dough. It calls for 1 1/4 c. flour, 1/4 c. salt, 1 1/2 TB. oil, 1 c. boiling water and 1 unsweetened Kool Aid packet. Just mix all of the ingredients together. If you have a stand mixer with the dough hook, it's really easy. It smells nice, stays soft in a Ziploc bag for a long time and isn't sticky.

This is the tried and true recipe from the pre-school we were at for 7 years (through all the kids). I've also made up double batches, then split up and given away in cute packages with cookie cutters as b-day gift or party favors.

3cups flour; 1 1/2cups salt; 2 TBLS cream of tarter; 3cups water; 3 TBLS oil; food color or koolaid.
Mix all ingredients in pot over medium heat (non-stick is the easiest); use food coloring or koolaid packet to color and add smell to dough. Stir until completely mix bubbles and begins to solidify, then turn out onto countertop and knead until play dough texture (it will be very hot at first, then is nice and warm- fun for kids to knead when warm).

Store in a ziplock bag. It will stay for MONTHS (no kidding!). I've left this mix out for hours, then just put back in the bag for storage and kneaded when it was necessary. ENJOY!

The recipe day cares and preschools use is..
2 cups flour
1 cup salt
water as needed
you can add food coloring and you can add water if it starts to dry. There is no cooking required. It is edible (but tastes horrible)

This is the easiest and best one I have found so far.
2 cups flour
1 cup salt
1 tbsp Alum (in the spice section)
1/4 cup vegetable oil
2 cups of boiling water

Put all dry ingredients in a large bowl. Add the water to the oil in a large measuring cup. Add food coloring or scents if you wish to the water/oil mix before adding it to the dry mixture. Mix for a couple of minutes until it looks uniform, it will start to get more doughy.

Then take it out of the bowl and knead on a floured surface. It will be really warm still but the kids like to help with this part. The helps to get lumps out and also ensures the color evens out.

It will last about 2-3 weeks in a baggie. No refrigeration needed.

Have Fun!

The ABSOLUTE BEST!!!!
3C flour
3C water
1.5 C salt
6 TBLSP oil
AND THE KEY: 6 TSP cream of tartar (it is a powder found in the spice section)

Add food coloring of your choice to the water..about 15 drops. Combine all ingredients and cook at medium high heat stirring continuously until consistency is quite thick and difficult to mix -- the mixture should be pulling away from the side of the pot (approx 3-5 minutes for me closer to 5)

Remove from pot, knead until smooth and let cool. Voila! PLAYDOUGH. Store in air tight plastic bag and container.

ENJOY

I made both of these for years with my four kids.

STOVE TOP PLAY DOUGH
1 c. flour
1/4 c. salt
2 Tbsp. cream of tartar
1 c. water
2 tsp. vegetable food coloring
1 Tbsp. oil

Mix flour, salt and cream of tartar. Add water, food coloring
and oil. Cook over medium heat and stir for about 3-5 minutes.
It will look like a "globby" mess. When it forms a ball in the
enter of the pot, turn out and knead on a lightly floured
surface. Store in airtight container or plastic bag. Edible
but not tasty.

PEANUT BUTTER PLAY DOUGH
18 ounce jar of smooth peanut butter
6 Tbsp. honey
non-fat dry milk
Cocoa or carob (optional)

Mix. Decorate with raisins. Eat!

H. K I think I should probably make an appointment! here's the best play dough! I love that you asked....Play Dough Recipe 1
4 cups flour
1 cup salt
4 cups water
4 tablespoons oil
1/2 cup cream of tartar
Mix all ingredients in a sauce pan. Cook and stir over low/medium heat until play dough is completely formed and no longer sticky. Allow to cool slightly before storing in an air tight container or zip lock bag.

Variations:
Add one package of unsweetened powdered Kool-Aid to your playdough to give it a great smell. (Thanks to James Slaughter for this variation).
Where to get cream of tartar
Cream of tartar can be expensive and comes in very small containers in the spice section of the grocery store. It is actually a by product of wine making, so if you have a winery near your house, try calling them and see if they will give you some for free. I have not tried using this type of unprocessed cream of tartar. If anyone has and has any comments about this, please let me know by sending an email to Linda Bastiani (____@____.com)

Nadine writes, "I called a restaurant food supply store in my area (Nobel Sysco) and they carry it in 25 ounce packages for $12.00"
Jan Fitch found cream of tartar at the Amish Market in Burtonsville, MD.
Sarah DeOpsomer says that you can sometimes buy things like this in bulk at co-op grocery stores.
Shari Reese was able to purchase cream of tartar at GFS (Gordon's Food Service) in a 2 lb. [imagine how much play dough that would make] container for 12.65.
Sue Hedges says that you can buy cream of tartar online at myspicer.com.
Gina Samples also found cream of tartar online at bulkfoods.com - use this link to get to the 5lb quantity.
Tabitha Brittain says that you can substitute one part baking soda and one part baking powder for cream of tartar.
