Pearl Etiquette

Several years ago my husband and I gave my mother in law pearl earring studs and a pearl ring for Mother's Day. She passed away in March. My father in law, who has kept himself distant from everyone since her passing stopped by today (he's leaving tomorrow for Florida for the winter and won't return until "it warms up" so most likely May) and gave me a bag with 2 jewelry boxes in it. One is for my daughter and the other for me. It turns out she has returned the pearls to me with a small note...To B., Love, Mom...I just bawled.

My question is this...is it okay to wear the pearl earrings daily? I've thought about it and would like to get my ears pierced again. I already have 3 in my left ear and 2 in my right. I have a pair of diamond studs in my 2nd holes that I received from my husband for my birthday and a smaller diamond stud that was a present on our wedding day from my husband. (I only have 1 of those becuase when our oldest was 1yo, he ripped the other one out of my ear while in the yard and we never found it) I wear the diamonds everyday. None of the studs, including the pearls are very large and are all tasteful. I'm usually the sort of person that 'bucks' the trends and do what I want, however I feel the need to do this properly as this is an unexpected and wonderful gift from my mother in law. Would wearing them everyday damage them at all?

Thanks everyone!

I think it would be fine, and a wonderful tribute to her! I never met my late MIL but before my wedding, my FIL gave me a strand pearls that were hers and I wear them both for dressy and casual occasions. I don't think that they'll be prone to damage worn on the ears but you might want to be careful with shampoo and hair products just in case. Maybe a jeweler can let you know how careful you need to be (like should you take them out before shampooing) but I would guess that they'd be just fine.

What a wonderful gift from your mother in law. She obviously wanted you to have the earrings.
There is nothing wrong with wearing them every day, but you have to remember that pearls are delicate.
I wouldn't sleep in them or shower in them, put them on AFTER your hair is styled so as not to get any hairspray, etc on them.
Taken care of properly, you will be able to hand them down to your own daughter one day.

Best wishes.

I would wear them often. But do not sleep/shower in them since pearls need special care, or wear them around the house if you want the pearls to last. If you are going to be outdoors, the beach, sporting activity... do not wear the pearls, sweat and exposure can damage them. Put the pearls in after you style your hair, after spritzing with perfume, since hair sprays and such can damage their luster and nacre. A common rule is "Pearls are the last thing you put on when dressing and the first thing you take off when you get home".

Aaaw, what a lovely story! Of course you can wear your pearls everyday. Just be careful how much exposure they have to chemicals, like hairspray and perfume and such.

Enjoy!

Check out the mikimoto link Laurie put up... but YES. Absolutely.

Pearls can be worn any time of day, any day of the year, at any age... except in your bathing suit with bare feet. ((You CAN wear pearls in your suit with heels on, it's an odd thing, I know)).

Just wipe them down with a cloth from time to time.

You can and should wear your pearls as often as possible. And as the incomparable Miss Manners always said, it is appropriate to wear pearls with everything but your bathing suit!

I love pearls and wear them all the time. I think they are sensitive to water!!! I cannot remember nor can I tell any damages to my earrings from every day wear. I do not shower or sleep in earrings as they bother me while sleeping.

so sorry for your loss...

yes, wearing the studs daily will damage them

pearls are very fragile, so must be put on after applying makeup and hairspray, so as to not damage them.

further, they are drilled partway thru to allow the post/cup to attach to the pearl, but are glued into the cup. wearing them in the shower/pool will deteriorate the glue.

NEVER wear them in the pool as the chlorine will eat away at the pearl
