Hi C.,
We lived in Payson back when my 19-year-old was born. (we're in Mesa now) My husband is a highway patrolman. I loved Payson and would move back if it weren't for work, price of homes and the distance from good doctors. Actually Payson has some really good doctors but, I have leukemia and see a doctor in San Diego. I loved Payson as it is warm in the summer but cools down so much at night. An evap cooler is all you need there. The winters are not very bad. Up on the rim is where it is really cold. Payson sits right at the edge of that. My husbands area was all the way on the rim though so for him it was VERY busy when it snowed and cold as well. So, the type of work you or your spouse does is important to look at too. Some do commute from up there. I think that would get really old though. The schools are very good. It lacks some in extra activities for kids. We traveled down to the valley for dance classes. The summer is awful for driving in town as so many "flat-landers" come up there. The only shopping is Walmart and Home depot. Groceries and gas cost more. Lots of CA people have moved there so I don't know if it took away from the little town feel. You can't get TV there without cable or satilite. They do have cell phone towers there now. So, I hope that helps some. Let us know if you relocate.
