Ugh. have dealt with this when I was living in an apartment years ago. Drives you nuts! Mine was teenagers who used to blare music & lift weights in the basement (I was on 1st floor) and O. day I was home sick, they blared the music, I freaked out, and MADE them follow me up into my apartment to hear just how loud it was--and it never happened again.
I think you did the right thing. You tried to be nice about it. After that, call the police.

If the neighbors won't be quiet and it's after the "normal" quiet time - then yes, if I have asked them to be quiet and then they counteract that by turning it up - yes, I would call the police....I would also inform the management office and see if there is another apartment available to you..moving sucks but a 12 hour shift is NOT fun and you need sleep!!!

I hope this gets resolved...soon...you can't magically teach someone respect - unfortunately!!!

Dear G.,

I am friends with my neighbors too. I live upstairs and my downstairs neighbors likes to crank up the music too, I don't say anything as long as its off by 9 PM. Before 9 PM if it gets too loud, I turn on my dryer and the sound vibrates down and drowns out some of their noise. Usually, within a few minutes, the music is lowered or turned off all together.

There's probably a "noise ordinance" in your town or county. I would get a copy of that (it may be on line) and along with a note remind your friend and neighbor that you and your family rise at 5:30 AM and need your rest.

I use to have a noisy couple right next door, they would play music, drink and fight til all hours. They were usually winding down about 2 - 3 AM and I was getting up about the same time your husband does. One morning I decided to bang on their door when I got up. When she answered, I just asked, "Were you sleeping, because that's what I was trying to do when you two were raising hell all night". She looked pretty embarrassed. Now, I knew the couple and we were always cordial to each other, so I would not recommend anyone do that if you think an early morning bang on the door might get your lights punched out.

They moved out within six months, I think both of them were arrested, not due to the noise, but due to their lifestyle.

If your neighbor keeps it up and the manager won't do anything about it, I would continue to call the cops because sooner or later, the will be cited for disturbing the peace.

Blessings.......

You did the right thing. They could have turned it down and avoided the visit from the police.

You did the right thing. I would not consider them my friends a friend would understand and turn the music down when asked not turn it up louder. I can understand on the weekend or if they are having a party but all the time is rude.

Unfortunately, some people are that way.... they don't care about how their actions affect others.

This will keep happening, I'm afraid... all you can do is keep complaining to the manager and the police.... I have a feeling they will start retaliating (getting back) in some way, either with more noise, or vandalism.

Even though you are "friends", she will probably be angry and try to get back at you some way. Some people are just like that, and have never grown up or had respect for others the way you obviously do.

I had noisy neighbors. They did not see how their blasting their stereo could be heard in my home. Yeah you have it at full blast and your home is only 20 feet from mine? I wondered how their ears didn't bleed.

I stopped talking to them about it and just called the cops when I really needed sleep. There are reasons why the laws are in place, people like that! :)

Check you city ordinances for noise rules. Most mechanically produced sound must be within certain limits 24 hours per day. That includes machinery in construction sites, radios, cars, semi brakes, etc...anything produced by a machine.

Our towns is online. We call the police on Walmart all the time when it's 1am and they start running a jackhammer outside my windows. Even during the day, if it is bothering us they have to stop. It's in the city ordinances. We always keep a copy on hand so we can give it to the police officer. They don't know every law/rule. It helps your credibility to have that to hand to them when you are asking them to interfere with a neighbors privacy.
