Loud Thumping Music, What Can I Do????

Ok ladies, I need your help. It's 3:55 am and I have been up for the last hour listening to the thumping of some jerk's music. This happens pretty much every Thursday night and usually goes until 5am, half hour before I have to wake up and go to work. Not to mention it wakes my infant son up everytime too. I am desperate for sleep, it's hard enough not getting any sleep because of your baby, but now missing sleep because of this?

I've walked around my building and can't find an apartment where it's coming from so I think it's coming from somewhere nearby in the neighborhood. I live in a not so good area so I don't want to canvas the neighborhood to find the house. My question is, would the cops be able to do anything if I can't tell them where it's coming from? Any suggestions on what I can do? It's vibrating through my apartment and the fan just isn't covering it up. Help!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks Ladies!

For some reason it only happens on Thursday nights. I guess Thursday is the new Friday. Anyways, I will definitely give the police a call next time and see if they can do a patrol around the neighborhood.

Thank you again for the advice!

Go down to SC PD tell them what's going on and where you live ask them to give you a complaint number. (They should give you a card that confirms the conversation you had and with whom).

The next time the music starts, call the non-emergency number and give them your complaint number. They could probably pin point just by a drive by where the music is coming from. (The person you speak with may not tell you this). If they can't do it from outside, ask them to come and listen in your home.

I would also suggest to your manager/building owners to send a flyer to every tenant that specifies the noise abatement laws in Santa Clara. I think there's a fine for repeat offenders.

My neighbor does the music thing too, but fortunately only about twice a year. I know it's really disturbing. My adult son was staying with me a few days last week and when the music started (at 2 AM)...He got the broom and pounded on the floor (stick end down) and what do you KNOW? The music stopped....almost immediately.

Blessings....

The police may not be able to find the source any more than you can, but it would be worthwhile to at least let them know you're having the problem. In past experience with such problems we've found that it may take calling again and again before the police can or will do anything about the situation. But.. as the old saying goes.. "the squeaky wheel gets the grease". You may find being a squeaky wheel for a while will pay off eventually.

Where I live, there is a noise ordinance, and the cops CAN make them turn it down. You don't have to be able to tell them which apartment it's coming from - tell them your apartment number, and let them follow the sound from there.

I would call the cops but if you live in a not-so-great neighborhood I don't know if they'll be able to help (maybe higher priority to attend to other stuff). I would make a simple poster and put it around your building, on the street outside and in the lobbies of the adjacent buildings (by the elevators would be a good place too). Write something like, "HELP my baby and I sleep at night! Please keep your music down between the hours of 9 pm and 5 am." Develop a relationship with your building manager and the ones next door. Maybe if you bring them a plate of brownies they will be more willing to help you spread the word :-). I would also look to move to a more family-friendly area or building. When there are a lot of families in the building, you can band together and have more clout. In my old apartment complex, we parents banded together to complain about a couple who had EXTREMELY loud, vocal, wall-banging sex, and they toned it down. (I was still very happy to move however)

You shouldn't have to stand for that. I'm surprised none of your other neighbors
have said anything. Ask your neighbors if they know where the noise is coming from. When you find out then call the police. Or maybe if enough people complain at the same time the police might patrol the area and find the place where the noise is coming from them self.

Call the police and tell them what's going on. Often they will drive around and find the source and tell the person to turn it down or turn it off. If you can talk to the neighbors and have them call in too. The more calls the more response you will get.

Go online and check your city ordinances for sound restrictions. We did this and found the regulations about noises produced by mechanical means...construction work, music, honking horns, tools, etc...anything produced by something mechanical. It is up to you to find the "proof" that an ordinance is being broken. Most officers only know about the decibel noise laws that are for certain hours of the night.

This type of ordinance is usually not related to time of day, for instance if someone complained about a neighbor sitting in their car at 3pm honking their horn to get kids in the car the police can give them a citation for it they don't stop. Of course they can start right back up when the police leave and eventually it will become a civil court case if someone wanted to take it that far.

We searched for ours because we live by Walmart and they try to schedule all construction work to be done during the night so it doesn't interfere with their daily deliveries and such. When you suddenly have a jack hammer going at 2am about 100 feet from your bed you can get very upset. Then the kids are up and everyone is pissed off. Calling Walmart doesn't help because they got the proper permits and are within their legal rights. They are correct but when we call the police we always hand them a copy of the ordinances so they can see they have legal standing to tell Walmart they must stop the noise.

Now, if they were standing outside singing acapella they could go on and on. It's the noise produced by mechanical means that gets them. The manager on duty has to go tell the construction workers to take the night off, with pay of course, they showed up expecting to work.

It will most likely fall on you or a neighbor to go walk the neighborhood and find who's doing it. It will be worth the time spent if you can resolve this issue.

Just call the police. They can make them turn it down. And if it continues then just keep calling. That is a disturbance and you do not have to tolerate it. Good Luck!
