Nevaeh?

Hi mamas!

After having two beautiful boys, I just found out last night that Im having a lil girl!!!! She is due Feb 14th and I am sooooooooo excited! But truthfully, I thought I was having another boy so I didnt even tease myself with girl names.

I really love the name Nevaeh pronounced: "Ne-vay-a" nicknames sound cute to me: Nev, Nevsy, Vea, Vaeh

Anyway, I think the name sounds beautiful, but I was reading some comments on a website that say it has a negative association because it is heaven spelled backwards. So what do you think?? I know someone is going to have opinions about any name I pick (as I learned picking names for my boys!) but I was just wondering what you ladies thought. I think it sounds so pretty,( heavenly actually :)

Oh I should mention, her middle name will be MaryElena (pronounced: Mary Elaina) after my mom who has passed and my MIL who is a wonderful woman who deserves some recognition! So I thought Neveah MaryElena had a nice ring to it too!

What do you ladies think??

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Also, this will probably be the last grandbaby for my MIL who has 4 grandsons and is over the moon excited for her granddaughter!! So, though the middle name is a little long, its happening! We are an Italian family so long names are fitting anyway! lol. :)

I am very much taking this with a grain of salt, but its interesting to see how many people dont like it lol! But there are a lot of names I dont like really either, so I completely understand! Im not worried about other people spelling it wrong, I have a Dominic and they spell his name wrong all the time too if you can believe it! And believe it or not, I havent seen the name much in my area. My son has gone to two preschools in the area with over 200 students and I havent seen the name on the lists at all ( I just looked through them again too!) But Im a Jennifer so I know what its like to be one of many. It never really bothered me tho. I actually liked the association with most of the other Jen's I know! :)

I love Maryelena for a middle name, but it is not going to be her first name. Thanks for all the responses! It has actually been suprising that no one on here has said that they have a Nevaeh for it being such a popular name. I just love the sound of it, so maybe I will change the spelling because I dont really care that its heaven spelled backwards. Thanks again!

I love the middle name! I am not a huge fan of Neveah, though. To me, it's cheesy and way over-used. If you like the name, then go for it.

Neveah MaryElena is a mouthful and it will be spelled incorrectly (especially with a capital E in the middle). If it was my child, I would cut out the Neveah entirely and name the baby Maryelena or Mary Elena.

Good luck and congratulations!

I like Mary Elaina. You could call her Elly, Laney, Lana, Mel. I'm offering an opinon, only because you asked. I don't want my child having to say, my name is Nevaeh, that's heaven spelled backwards, the rest of her life.
I don't like gimmicky names. Tricky spellings or combination of mom and dads name or an abstract object like Apple or Pilotinspector. If you are attached to the name, but wanted options, you could reverse it. Use Mary Elaina as 1st and Nev as middle. Then the nicknames would be more personal because only family would be calling her that.

Oh, boy, you might want to sit down for this... I don't think you will get too many people loving that name on this site... it has been asked before...

My thoughts, for what it's worth... it's a pretty sounding name, but TERRIBLY trendy right now... soooooo many Nevaeh's out there... I'm not a fan. And I also feel like Nevaeh MaryElena is kind of a mouthful. Have you considered just naming her Mary Elena? I think that sounds lovely and is classic yet cute, and not trendy at all. I'd doubt there would be another Mary Elena in her kindergarten class... Plus, it is sophisticated enough for a lovely adult woman. I understand if you only wanted that as a middle name, but if you do go with MaryElena as a middle name, maybe a simpler first name would work, since that's not exactly a short and sweet middle name... Just my humble opinion...

THAT SAID, she is YOUR BABY, and you can choose to name her whatever YOU LOVE, regardless what any of us says!

I don't mean to burst your bubble. I posted my idea for my baby girl's name on here (due early Feb.) and held my breath because I knew not everyone would like it... but I asked, so I had to be prepared for what people thought. Take it all with a grain of salt...

Congrats on your pregnancy!

Put me in the "hate it" camp. It just strikes me as a goofy made up name. The kind of name that a 15 year old picks out for a baby thinking it's clever and beautiful.

MaryElena is beautiful however - definitely keep that as a first or middle name.

If you really love the sound of it, try a different spelling so it's not "heaven spelled backwards."

Obviously you should go with what YOU love. But since you're asking for opinions, here's mine. I don't like Nevaeh. It seems like a name that's a fad and might someday be used as a joke on a sitcom where every girl in the class is named Nevaeh, Hannah or Kaitlyn/Catelyn/Katelyn and every boy's name ends in "en" (think Aiden, Jaden, Kaden, Hayden, Braden, yes, my daughter had all 5 of these boys in her kindergarden class, I thought it was hilarious). It also makes me think of the hand cream Nivea. MaryElena, however, is beautiful, classy and still unique enough that she won't share her name with 3 other kids in her class.

BTW, congrats on your little girl! You must be super excited!

Before you etch it in stone, make sure that you actually spell it correctly. If you want it to spell "heaven" when backward, then forward should look like this: Nevaeh. I want to both laugh and cry when I see how parents have misspelled a child's traditional name. (Dwyane Wade, for instance. And I used to know a girl who spelled her son's name "Micheal". If it's intentional, that's different.)

Sorry, but to me you'd be saddling your daughter with an unpronounceable name that is incredibly popular. So half the people would have no clue how to say her name... and after a few years of always having to spell her name to new friends, and to pronounce it for teachers, it would get a bit old. Then the other half of people would tell her that they have a neice or a neighbor with the same name. And she'd probably have another Neveah in her class.

The middle name you picked is cute - why not go with that instead?

Personally, I'm not the biggest fan of the name. I find it a bit trendy and pop-culture, but it's all your own choice and you have a good reason for wanting to associate Heaven with your new daughter! My SIL is an elementary school teacher and she has 2 Neveahs in her classes (and unfortunately, each of them is not the nicest kid--which has nothing to do with the actual name, but we all have name associations--like the 2 meanest kids in my school growing up both named Becky). Nevaeh is the #25 most popular name in the US according to a list I saw--only having been commonly used for the last 11 years! But if you can imagine an 85-year old woman with the name Neveah, go for it if you want it.

If you like the idea of having your child's name associated with Heaven, perhaps you could find a word in a different language that means the same?

In French it would be Ciel. Spanish would be Ciela. Other names also mean Heaven: Alya, Diana, Lani, Leilani, Nalani (those last 3 are Hawaiian) and apparently the planet Uranus is actually ancient Greek for Heaven!

Or what about Eden? It was a place of pure perfection (if you follow Biblical teachings)--like heaven on earth.

In the end, it's entirely up to you no matter what the rest of us think and if you're happy with whatever you choose, that's all the really matters!

I agree with others that "Naveah MaryElena" is a mouthful, but Mary Elena is absolutely beautiful. My vote (I know, I don't actually get a vote, har har!) would be to just make her name Mary Elena. Good luck! My last baby was a February baby as well, it was the best!

**I also wanted to add: Yes, the name Naveah is pretty trendy right now, but don't let that alone stop you. I chose the name Isabel for me youngest, and that name and its variations have been overused a lot the last few years. However, we call her "Izzy" and it is the perfect name for her, suits her very well, and I love it. So if you love the name, go for it :)

Personally I wouldn't be worried about the superstition of spelling a word backwards. If you like the name go for it!
I wouldn't stress too much about other people liking your child's name, it is your child, and you will see your baby more and call her by her name more than anyone else will. My husband's sister out right told me she hated the name we had picked out for our daughter. Plain as day "I hate that name". Part of it may have been spite, but I named her that anyway! You would be AMAZED how many people hear her name and comment about how adorable it is and how it is not a common name.
The most important thing for me was that I loved the names of my children as much as I loved my children, which is difficult, because I really LOVE my babies! ha! ha!

I had to re-read your sentence about the one site....'it has a negative association because it is heaven spelled backwards' ??? What??? I would think that would be a POSITIVE association...but what do I know?

What are the origins? It looks Jewish or Middle Eastern? It also reminds me of the nice German lotion, Nivea, widely used everywhere.

And Mary Elena sounds so Catholic, so I would probably stick with one spiritual identity.

After reading all the name posts on this site, I'm starting to become a fan of the parents choosing the name together and surprising every one with it....because the sex is no longer a surprise now.

Name your sweet little blessing whatever you feel in your heart is meant to be her name! I named my daughter Maeve (it's super popular in Ireland, like on coffee mugs popular -- not so much here -- I think a Kennedy kid has the name and the author Maeve Binchy, but that's about it!), so people of course had mixed opinions on it, but we went with it because I knew it was meant to be her name... and we love it!! Now I can't even imagine her as anything but a "Maeve" :)

As for my opinion on Nevaeh, it sounds pretty but at the same time, just randomly made up. Though prettier, I think it kind of falls into the category of names like Heaven, Miracle, Destiny, and so forth, which I'm not a huge fan of.

To me, it looks like it would be pronounced never, it just does not sound nice to me - sorry!
Why don't you spell it nevay instead?

I love the name and the middle name is sweet for the meaning but holy cow is that a big name for a baby and child. What about just Elaina Mary? Or Mary Elaina? Or a combination like Melanie? Neveah Elaine? Mariah Elaina?

When I saw "Nevaeh" written down as the title, I thought it was a funny spelling of the word "never" like when someone says "Nevah!" in place of Never. I would not guess to pronounce the way you intend on pronouncing it. I like the pronunciation of the name... it sounds nice and feminine. Nivaya might be a better spelling of it, though- I think you'd have less trouble telling people how to pronounce it.

This is just my opinion. I hate the name neveah. If it was me I would skip it and just use the family names as two separate names., Mary Elena.
