My 21 month old son sucks his thumb, and today when we picked him up from daycare i noticed that he had small bumps on the thumb that he sucks. I don't think that it is scabies because he doesn't seem to complain about itching or pain. As he sucks his thumb we are just asking around to see if it may be related to his thumb sucking or if it is anything else.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you very much for the help!
After minimizing the times he sucked his thumb the bumps went away and all should be well. The doctor's visit (just incase) also said that it is very common that blisters from sucking appeasr on the thumb, and also on the roof of his mouth. We are still minimizing the thumb sucking and all seems to be going well.. Thank you again!

More than likely it's from the thumb sucking. I sucked my thumbs until I was 5 or 6, by the time I quit I had these huge wart looking things on my thumbs. No evidence of them now though! I eventually got self conscious about it and decided to grow up.

No amount of hot sauce or anything nasty would do the trick, it's like trying to help an alcoholic. You're not doing any good unless he wants to be helped. I remember pretending to enjoy all that nasty stuff... while desperately sucking trying to get rid of it all! Hopefully your son isn't as headstrong as I was. Good luck!

Get bumps checked out. Also, try to get child care & you to distract him from thumb sucking. Some people never give it up - my 40 year old cousin still did it at night (she was upset because she was adopted by her grandmother (her mother wouldn't accept responsibility as a single parent). My mother, who had more influence, tried hot sauce, and all sorts of things (Nothing worked). Try to get him distracted to other things involving both hands.

I can offer only two possibilities. One is just that he's been sucking his thumb a lot and is getting the bumps from that (like when they are drooling from teething so they get bumps in their neck folds). The other option is less likely. Hand foot and mouth disease is fairly common at that age also. However he would likely have a fever and/or act like he's not feeling well. Personally I would watch him but not worry too much about it. If it's not bothering him he's probably fine. Just make sure that you clean the area fairly often to prevent the bumps from getting infected. HTH

Hey one of my twins sucks his thumb no matter what and he is 4, I am hoping that when they start school he will grow out of it. He just got a blister on it and that didnt stop him. As long as he is acting normal about it and not different than I wouldnt worry about it.
