Hi ladies,

We are moving to CS for my husband to finish up his degree in Petroleum Engineering. We are clueless to what areas are good/bad/in between and really needing some insight on affordable neighborhoods/apartments/ect to look into. We are needing to lease because we will most likely be leaving the area once he is done with school in two years. We would like to steer clear of big party areas because we have two young kids. If anyone could give some insight, I would really appreciate it! Thanks!

Howdy!
Most of College Station is a mixture of students housed in neighborhoods with families. Like behind the CS Target, Glade Street (though that is a very busy street to live on when you have small kids. There are culdesacs and such, like near Village and Holik.

The Southwood and Beecreek Dr areas are nice too. Check out www.csisd.org for info about the public school district and what the zoning areas are.

Living out, south, like in Pebble Creek subdivision is distant enough that you will want to make sure that your location more than makes up for paying more for gas to get to/from the campus.

The endearing greeting around here (in CS) is "Howdy!"

Good luck finding a place!

P.S. An option many people look for is TAMU bus stops. Ask your realtor about that or look at http://transportation.tamu.edu for more info.

I also suggest Southwood. I student taught in that area while attending A&M. Great neighborhoods and schools. I agree with the advice to stay a distance from the campus and you'll be fine. Gig'em!

THere are lots of family friendly areas in town. Stay away from anything within a couple of miles of campus and you should be fine. Castlegate, Pebble Creek, amnd Southwood Valley are all good places to start.
I would look at the Eagle online to see what rentals are available. Or hire a realtor.

Good Luck and Welcome to Aggieland!!!

Message me and I can give you specifics on most areas you are looking at. We have lived here for over 20 years and lived in many areas of town. We came for college and never left :)

we lived in Northgate in the early 90s. It was called the "Austin" of Aggieland. There were a lot of very liberal people living in Northgate. We spent a lot of time at Dudleys Draw and Fitzwilleys. I had a young child, but we lived in a cul de sac off Cherry and mmm what was that street? The street Subway is on in Northgate. We were one block from the Mosque, which was very cool. When the town empties of Texas kids, all that's left is International students and adults. We went over there for Ramadan and other festivals. So welcoming and so lovely. I think if you are within a certain radius of campus you are going to envounter mainly students. My baby was the only one child in the neighborhood, but she was loved and adored. Lots of Aggies took her under thier wing and still check on her now and she's 18. If you want to live in an area that is not centerd around the campus and college students, move to Bryan. It's a city that is so far removed from College Station, but it's only 10 minutes away. Me, I went for living a bike ride from campus and we loved it.
