Moving to Irving

Hi Moms:

I plan on moving to Irving and I just wanted to know if you ladies that live in Irving think that it is a good city. I work 1 mile south of 114 and MacArthur so I want to live close to work but in an affordable and family friendly safe neighborhood. My children are only 15 months old so I don't have to worry about schools right now but that is also something to think about. I am from Dallas and it seems so different from Dallas but so far I like it. I don't like how everything is so spread out though. You have to drive so far just to get to a fast food restaurant because there is nothing right off the highway. So is Irving a good place to live? Any input is welcome.

What can I do next?

Valley Ranch is a great area to raise kids. I lived there when my daughter was young and there is so much to do. With Coppell being very close, the YMCA there has tons of stuff for you to participate in. Also in Valley Ranch, the area is very safe and very neighborhood friendly. You would really like it there.

Hi N.,

I've never lived in Irving. However, both my adult children lived in Valley Ranch (a suburb) in Irving. They lived out there for about 6 or 7 years. They loved it and whenever I went to visit them I always enjoyed being out there.
Now that my Husband has passed away; if they were still living there I'd move there as well.

Just one mother's observation.

A LITTLE ABOUT ME:

I'm a born again believer in Jesus Christ.

Even though I know no human is perfect.I am a perfectionist and very meticulous about where I and my family live. I am very family oriented, practical, and
frugal.

I retired from a Major company 7 years ago. I enjoy my children, grandchildren, friends and church family.

I pray that you and your children find exacly what you need and that the Lord will give you favor with everyone you come in contact with so that you'll find your new home affordable, safe and everything you need it to be.

It depends where you live in Irving LOL. You should try just north of 114 or around the area. I wouldn't live too far south. I don't live in the area but it is more run down south of 183 and may not be the safest.

If you don't mind me asking, where do you work? I also work off 114 and Macarthur.

Irving is not what it used to be, but the parts by Valley Ranch are o.k. It is definitely worth considering moving before your kids reach school age...I know I'm ready to get out of here. Grapevine, Coppell or Lewisville are my first choices. Good luck!

Have lived in Irving my whole life.
I would reccomend it to anyone, as I only left for college.
As with any new city there are some differences and some annoyances. Yes things are spread out, but it is less dirty than Dallas. We do have good schools here, my children go to WT Hanes and that is a Recognized school. North Irving is up and coming and there are lots of places to eat their and shop, try looking at MacArthur and 635.

Welcome to the neighborhood.

I'll send you a message, but on the whole, I LOVE living in Irving. It's a huge improvement over Dallas.

Edit - There is a common misconception that south of 183 (or even south of Northgate) is a bad area, just because it looks a bit run-down. But, if you look at the crime statistics, some of the worst crime is in Valley Ranch. I've known many people who lived in VR (especially in apartments) who were robbed/mugged/burglarized/assaulted. The problem is that VR looks nice and therefore it's assumed that it's a nicer part of town. But honestly, "south" Irving has some even better neighborhoods. It depends on how much house you can afford, but I would recommend you look in areas like the Hospital district, the areas just south of Baylor Irving (off Grauwyler) and the areas known as "Barton Estates" and "Sherwood Forest". Of course, if you can afford it, Hackberry Creek is a nice neighborhood with many young families and it's in the CFB ISD.

N., I am out of the loop...what is WOHM?

I have raised 2 generations of kids in Irving. It is a kid friendly town. The Irving Arts Center has programs unmatchable anywhere for children. My daughter competed in gymnastics against all the elite groups & gyms in Texas and we were at the local Irving Gymnastics held at Irving High School. All my young children spent their summers in the recreation programs with all their friends. I had an alliance with several moms and we did rec circuit all summer. The swimming pools are excellent. North Lake has a Natatorium. The 5 year plan that the city has is well on its way to the betterment of the community. I love all the pocket parks with their bronze statues of children. I substitute in the schools and all the teachers have a heart for the kids. I grieve over the ethnic imbalance that has taken place in Texas let along our small town. Talk about small town. You can get anywhere in 20 min or less so it is easy to be involved in a lot of things. I have found that if you will volunteer in the schools and stay involved everything is great and you have a lot of imput in the way things are handled on your campus. You can call me and I will tell you more if you like. I live on the south side of town near SW Park. It is an interesting neighborhood because it has a wide range of socio econominc homes. I love my neighborhood but I have been here since 1984. Go on the IISD school website and it can give you hints about each neighborhood by checking its demographic makeup.

It is a town that can be a blessing if you get involved and be a part of the solution to whatever is important to you.

As long as its not south of say Northgate, its not too bad.. I've lived here for 15 years, but I can't wait to get out of here. The schools just keep getting worse :( (My SIL is a teacher who recently transferred to a different district)

Personally, I LOVE Flower Mound where my BIL & Best friend live. I tend to go up there more and avoid home when I can.

I lived in Valley Ranch for 5 years. It's AWESOME! Las Colinas is great too. Lots of close shopping/restaurants in Las Colinas. I also lived near Northgate and I like that area too. It's very quiet there. South of 183 is not that great. I live there now. They are fixing it up in lots of ways, but I prefer to stay around the northgate area and north.
