Mayonnaise and Condiments Question

I was raised on Miracle Whip - never really liked it - so I usually chose PB&Js instead of chicken...

Once I was older - I was at my BILs deli (his family owned a 7/11 style store and it had a deli) and had a sandwich with real mayonnaise on it - and I was hooked!! I bought MAYO for me at home - my mom just shook her head and said "it's your money"...

When they come to visit - I make sure I have Miracle Whip for them (eww in my book now!!)

However, I'm going through my coupons and I see one for Duke's Mayo. I've been using Hellman's Mayo...do you think there's a difference? I've tried "store brand" mayo and I DO taste a difference....

Just like with Guldens Mustard...etc.

So what are your favorite condiments? What is something that you will buy even though it's more expensive than another brand?

thanks for sharing!!

What can I do next?

Miracle Whip for me, and Mayo for the rest of the house (any brand).
Please pay close attention to my next statement; for ketchup, it HAS to be Heinz, NO EXCEPTIONS. lol
Mustard can be any brand.
Bread can be any brand for that matter, and so can the peanut butter and the lunch meat...

According to my dad everything I buy is expensive. They are generic addicts.

I can't stand anything but Heinz ketchup. I like Miracle Whip and don't like mayo but I think that is a matter of taste ya know?

I can't stand off brand peanut butter....

Here's an interesting Hellman's vs. Duke's article:

http://blogs.riverfronttimes.com/gutcheck/2011/08/fight_c...

Growing up, my dad did the cooking and shopping, and he absolutely refused to use anything but Hellmann's. I didn't realize there were other brands until I was in high school!

I now try to use Smart Balance brand when possible (better nutrition), but for nostalgia I will only use Hellmann's when making one of my dad's recipes.

M****** W*** isn't allowed in our house. ; )

I only buy Lea and Perrin's Worcestershire sauce, Grey Poupon dijon mustard, and I only use olive oil from a single country (like only from Greece or Spain or Italy, not mixed countries). I think it tastes better. I don't buy salad dressings, I make my own, and I have a shelf full of white wine vinegar, champagne vinegar, red wine vinegar, hot sauces, all the Tabasco flavors and everything I need to make my own teriyaki sauce and bbq sauce and salad dressings and marinades. But I do spend extra money on the quality basics that go into them.

Cheryl, have you ever made your own mayonnaise? If you have a food processor or Kitchen Aid mixer, it's easy to do, and once you've tried it that way, you won't like the commercially-made brands any more! I'll send you the recipe if you like. I agree with you, Miracle Whip is gross. It's kind of like margarine vs. butter - why go with the fake, weird stuff when you can have the real version instead?!

I do like Heinz ketchup vs the store brand. I can't tell the difference between the various brands of pickle relish, so I just buy whatever is on sale. We have about 5 different kinds of mustard in the fridge at any given moment (the bright yellow Heinz kind because I like it on hot dogs but not anything else, then about 3 kinds of fancy brands of deli mustard, and Grey Poupon Dijon - which I use to make salad dressing, among other things). We also have a whole shelf of hot sauces (Tabasco, Tapatio, Cholula, etc.) in one of our cupboards. We actually do use all of them, and it's hotly contested (no pun intended) as to which one is the best! It IS interesting how you can usually tell the difference between store brands and name brands.

I buy both Kraft May and Miracle Whip (not store brand mayo or salad dressing). On anything but ham, I use mayo. Ham get MW (my hubby uses mayo except for when it's Roast Beef and then he uses mustard...yuck!).

For my salads, I use a bit of both.

Growing up, we only had mayo and so little of that you couldn't taste it even in the salads.

I cannot stand any kind of Mayo except Hellmans. If you have the money to spend then go ahead and try it. I would not be able to use my most valuable resource to try anything out though. Our food money budget is very tight.

Kraft Mayo is the only kind I buy. It is so thick.

Miracle Whip should never ever ever even be compared to mayo in my opinion! It is like the difference between ginger ale and Vernor's... Vernor's is this super sweet soda they try to pass off here in Michigan as ginger ale even in restaurants -- NO way are they even close. Miracle Whip and Vernor's are totally banned in my house!!

I was raised on Hellman's. I cannot stand Miracle Whip. Ugh. gross. My MIL made me a sandwich once with it, and I ate it, of course..but. oh my!

Anyways, moving on..My son and I are Ketchup lover's . I love ketchup and mustard more then any other condiment. Grey Poupon for fancy times.:)

Salad dressing usually is EVOO and Balsamic Vinegar. I don't really like any of the other kinds of dressings.

Barbecue sauce always has to be homemade. I don't like store bought. A good bbq sauce goes a long way!

I'm loyal to Hellman's.
My husband is loyal to Miracle Whip.
I buy both & never try "off" brands.
I don't use coupons for things I don't normally buy.
It's not a bargain when you're disappointed, right?

Also Heinz Ketchup ONLY and Gulden's brown and French's yellow mustard.

Funny, my husband grew up on Miracle Whip & I, on mayonnaise (Cains -- a regional brand that I absoluely LOVE & now mail to my Midwest family members). He used to give me grief about only buying mayo so, afte almost 20 years of marriage, I finally broke down & bought him his own small jar of Miracle Whip. About 3 years later, I finally threw it out, unopened. He hasn't said a word about mayo since. ;-)

We are totally condiment crazy -- really. I like Simply Heinz ketchup (I think it has, like, 5 ingredients -- all of which I can pronounce!). For mustard, we have both dijon style (usually Grey Poupon) and Gulden's. I don't think I'll ever buy a yellow mustard intentionally. We also have a couple of kinds of Robert Rothschild Farm mustards (Raspberry Wasabi & another -- great for dipping with pretzel sticks).

We like Ken's or Brianna salad dressings, Lee & Perrin Worcestershire sauce, good quality oils & vinegars (though no articualr brand). I'm not a huge barbecue sauce fan -- except for a homemade sauce a friend makes.

Catherine C -- I want to be you when I grow up! I've always wanted to try my hand at making my own mayo. I've heard it's absolutely fabulous. I've never quite gotten around to it, though. Maybe some day...

Have you ever made homemade mayo? Wow, it is so amazingly good! I recommend it. It's not hard either. I'm with you - Real Mayo is much better than that fake stuff. I buy Annie's salad dressing over other brands bc it has no preservatives and tastes better to me. Actually, now I make my own salad dressing too. It's so easy and since doing this even Annie's does not taste as good.

I am not a fan of mayo. We hardly use it ever - only in chicken salad or potato salad. And I use the Kraft Olive Oil mayo which my husband seems to prefer. I also have, I just remembered, a Chipoltle Mayo that we put on sandwiches on the rare occasion we buy lunchmeat. When I order a burger, I order it with no mayo, easy mustard.

What condiment do I put on everything I can? - Franks Red Hot. Oh geez my mouth just started watering as I typed that. Seriously. I put that Shi# on everything! just like their slogan says. Tater tots - every bite of hamburger - fries - chicken nuggets .... I even put a small bottle in my purse and opened it up at a restaurant the other day. I'm that hooked.

Husband can't stand Franks. He likes Tapatio on everything.

There are few things I am brand loyal about and Hellman's full fat mayo is one of them. I have tried Kraft and it's not the same. THANK GOD you don't eat Miracle Whip. It is horrid. We also use dijon mustard in our house, mostly for cooking or adding to chicken salad. Either Mielle or Grey Poupon works. We don't really use ketchup or anything else. Mayo is our favorite.

I grew up on Miracle Whip for sandwiches, Mayo for other stuff. I'm all well rounded and stuff. ;)
I personally don't care because I don't use a ton anyway (though my husband will say it's "treasonous" to have MW in the house).
Ketchup though must be Heinz, NO EXCEPTION. It is the law. I don't use a lot of it (fries....I guess that's it because I like Heinz 57 on burgers)...but it must be Heinz or nothing at all. And for the free ketchup packets from fast food shops, for some reason I SWEAR that Whataburger has the best ketchup. Don't know why.
Mustard: I like Guldens brown, Zatarains creole, or Grey Poupon.
If I eat ranch dressing, it must be Hidden Valley.
Lea & Perrins W-sauce (not gonna try to spell what I can't even pronounce).
For steak marinade it either needs to be homemade OR Daddy Hinkles.
BBQ sauce......I don't mind Baby Rays raspberry chipotle if it's going to be on a shredded pork sandwich in my crockpot, or from the Dreamland restaurant in Mobile, AL, but otherwise it should be homemade. I will never just stick store bought stuff on chicken I'm about to bbq.
I like to make my own salsa but also like Mrs Renfros.

The only mayo I buy is either Hellman's or Duke's, so they're equal in my opinion. I'm right there with you about Miracle Whip - ewww, yuck, disgusting! And don't even get me started on store brands. **shudder**

I like Heinz over Hunt's ketchup, but will use the Hunt's if it's on sale with a coupon. :) I love Gulden's mustard too, but my kids love just plain old yellow mustard by anyone. I especially like Gray Poupon, but only my husband and I will eat it - I usually buy it when it goes on sale.

I'm truly only brand loyal to the two mayonnaise listed above and Cottonelle or Quilted Northern toilet tissue. ha ha!

Fun post!

I'm a Miracle Whip gal, but do have a few things I make with Mayo and won't turn down a sandwich just cause it has Mayo not Miracle Whip. Also, I can't stand mustard on a sandwich, burger or hotdog, but do cook with it when making deviled eggs, sloppy-joes, and other things.

LOL! I just made homemade mayo for the first time last week! I couldn't believe how easy to was to make. And the ingredients you need are things you probably already have in your kitchen.

I went to France years ago, and was served escargot with real mayonnaise. OMG. I slathered those slimy little snails in that mayo, and I've been dreaming about that mayo ever since!

The only condiments I buy are ketchup and BBQ sauce. I really don't care what brand of BBQ sauce I buy, although when we go out, Chik-fil-a is the best! I only buy Heinz ketchup. The cafeteria at work just changed providers and they use Hunts ketchup, so I have been bringing my own and will only use theirs if I run out. One of my work Secret Santa gifts was Heinz ketchup packets from all the fast food places.
