Love and Logic - Dallas,TX

I have been battling with my 4yr old son lately on his manners and discipline. I picked up my love and logic book that I read when he was 2 however it did not work so well at that age (we have some learning differences and language delay issues) for him so I thought I would give it another try. It seems to be working now however sometimes I am just not sure how to put it into practice. I was wondering if anyone has found any additional resources on love and logic beside the book that has helped them. I noticed that the authors will be in my area soon for a seminar and was wondering if anyone has attended one of their seminars and if it is worth the money if you have read their book already?

Thanks!

I went to a L&L class in Southlake for free, through the ECPTA (early childhood PTA). The founders weren't there, but there was a teacher and we watched video clips, went over things in a workbook, group discussion, etc. Loved it, really worked well for our oldest (3 at the time) but even more importantly, it worked well for ME. (I needed some help to know how to talk to him instead of everything being a fight). They have tons of books, don't know which one you've read.

Where will the seminar be? I would love to go to it! Ok - see it in Grapevine on April 16.

I'm emailing my husband RIGHT NOW to see if we can both go together to the Toddler session.

I have the book, and a zillion other books too, and I think we do a pretty good job. For the price ($30 each) , it does not seem too expensive (especially considering all the other ____@____.com we spend money on for our kids).

If he can get off work, we are going!

I would go to an actual seminar if I could. I have taken the classes by video twice and I imagine it would only be better if you actually got to be in the class with them.

I would suggest going to the seminar! They are very hands on and the speakers (especially Jim Fay) are very entertaining to listen to. I went as part of professional development when I was a teacher. I used their strategies often with my students and now with my children, ages 2 and 3. I think for the youngest ages their strategy about giving a lot of choices is most helpful. For instance if my son has something that I don't want him to have. I will give him two choices that are fine with me like: would you like to put the pencil on the table or hand it to me? He will usually choose one or the other. If he doesn't then I say, I will give you 5 seconds to decide then I will have to decide for you. Do this with a neutral tone, so he doesn't detect your emotion. If he doesn't choose, then I say, I'm sorry, but I am going to take the pencil from you now. Or if he does comply then I say, thanks for making a good choice. It seems very simple, but what kids want at this age is some control. By giving them choices you allow them to have that. Just frame the choices around what is ok with you. Once you get the hang of it, it is actually fun for both of you. Anywhere you go you can give choices.
In the seminar they will give you all sorts of ideas and opportunity to role play them so you will retain the information. It is well worth the money if you can swing it! Good luck!

I LOVVVE love and logic!!! if YOU GET THE CHANCE GO GO RUN TO THE SEMINAR, THAT WILL BE NEAR YOU. THOSE MEN ARE AMAZING.

What amazes me is that i am doing love and logic technicque all day with my youngest two who are 4 and almost three. They have the hardest time doing it when i am calling out the uh-ohs. When daddy comes home to all three all he has to do is clear his throat and they think an uh-oh is coming and the all pipe up dad i was.....I am a lot stricter about it though. anyways we take refresher courses through our church and through Community colleges. They also sell cds you can listen to. They are pricy at 64.95. Your library may have a waiting list if you dont mind waiting. Ours is almost 8 months out. so we went ahead bought the cds.

I have tried very may different parenting techs. this has by far worked the easiest. My older two share a room and when we got startedwith it at home their poor room was bare down to the walls.

It is something that we do rotate through right now we are focusing more on our youngest as he is displaying the most issues right now. my oldest gets it and my milkshake in the middle is learning...that he doesnt like rules!!

GO to the seminar. I wish they would come up this way more.

To you good luck mamas'
libby

Hi D.,

If you have a child who may be dealing with more issues/differences, I would suggest that you look at a program called Celebrate Calm (www.celebratecalm.com). They are very love and logic oriented but also focus on understanding how your child may be wired differently and what may be motivating that behavior. It's really helped me a lot. I have attended Love and Logic seminars and I like the program - it's got a ton of valuable info, but I just feel like Celebrate Calm is sort of like L&L on steroids.
