I have recently started classes through a church on Love and Logic Parenting. I was wondering if anyone else has tried this form of parenting or have even heard of it. I would like to hear pros and cons.

I have used this with my kids rather inconsistently. When I use it, it works well and things are much smoother around here. I definitely recommend it. It is a wonderful and rather logical approach to discipline.

Hi C.. I took Love and Logic and all through the class, everything seemed to make sense. But, it didn't seem to work for us in everyday life. Parts of it did work. Since then, I took a Conscious Discipline class through our church and I was skeptical but it is wonderful. It made so much more sense and was more practical because the goal is to be "conscious" of what you do and say and how to handle situations. If you are interested in learning more, there is a Conscious Discpline book and its by Dr. Becky Bailey. The book is just as powerful as the class. I would highly recommend it and it has proven wonders.

I first heard of love and logic when I was teaching, and I loved it. I actually saw Jim Faye in person at the RLDS auditorium, and love all of his stories.

I now have three kids, and I'm still using it. I love the idea of choices and of natural consequences. The best part is that everything doesn't have to be a battle. It's cold out, you don't want to wear your coat? "Ok, but it will be cold." We leave, "Mommy, I"m cold." "Yeah, I know, I hope next time you decide to wear your coat." I think the hardest part is being empathetic instead of sarcastic. But again, if it's not a battle, it's much easier for me to be empathetic.

Also, take what works for you and youre family, you don't have to use all of it all the time. There are sometimes when it goes right out the window - like when my child runs out in the parking lot, um, getting hit by a car would be a natural consequence, but not one I'm willin to let my child experience.

I also love the philosophy behind love and logic. Allow your child to mess up when their small, learning from their choices when those consequences aren't detrimental. That will teach them to not make bad choices when they get older which would lead to much stiffer consequences.

It is a wonderful program!!!! I have taught it, recommended it to clients, and use in my daily life. I would suggest buying the books that relate to the age of your children. If you check on the website you can find out when they will be speaking in the area. I highly recommed that you hear them speak if you can.

I've done Love and Logic and Common Sense Parenting. It all boils down to what you are willing to commit to using and doing it consistantly. All of the coaches will tell you we can outlast a kid...but we all know in reality that there are those days when we just don't have what it takes to outlast them...

Go to the classes with an open mind and try the things out...mostly, I used the classes to learn something new and exchange stories with other parents that had gone through what I was going through at the moment...frankly, you just can't beat the free advice. Face it, these little buggers just don't come with user manuals (at least I never found mine), a money back guarantee, mute, pause, rewind or volume control...Anything, any tool, you can use to make it through the day is helpful.

Love and Logic is a program that makes your children think. It also makes you think because you have to outsmart them before they outsmart you. It's hard to keep up the energy on it but I continue to use it to teach them valuable lessons instead of "I told you so." They now, tend to at least listen when I make recommendations (mine are 3 & 5). If you have a consequence, definitely make sure you follow through on whatever it is or they will walk all over you.

I have not yet read the Love and Logic for parenting; however, I am currently (along with the school I am student teaching in) reading the Love and Logic for teaching. I do have to say it is AMAZING and is working really well with the students. The ideas offered in the book are simple and effective. There is also good explinations as to why the ideas work.

I have also heard great things about the parenting one and do plan to read it. I have a three year old that I am using some of the teaching ideas with and they are working so I am sure the parenting one will be great too.

I would definately recommend at least reading the book(s) and trying the ideas out. I mean even if they dont all work, I am sure you will find some that really do and that you like. Hope this helps a little. :)

I've heard of it, but I have never taken the class.
They teach it in my city. I've attended another type
parenting class called, "Guiding Good Choices" though.
The "Guiding Good Choices" was a class for middle school
families and was free. The Love & Logic came with a small
fee. Both offered free dinner and child care for those that
needed it.

Love and Logic is an excellent foundation for parenting skills. I, too, went through the class. We don't use all of it all the time, but the more we use it - the better life is! In fact, I am planning to take a refresher. I think they have a website too! Our public school system in Quincy, IL utilizes L&L in the classroom - how wonderful is that? Best of luck to you! You've lucked in to an awesome program!

It absolutely works if you use it correctly. I have taken the class and have bought some of their DVD's and CD's. They help to refresh the basics and give the parent a boost. When I find that I am having the most trouble with my kids (and day care kids) it is when I have strayed from L&L. I replay a CD and quickly get back in the groove. I have been using L&L for two years now. This year my daughter's Kindergarten teacher asked me "Is your daughter really shy or just very well behaved?" My son's preschool teacher thanked me for raising such a great child. Believe me my kids are not perfect and get in there fair share of trouble but their good behavior is because my husband and I apply L&L on a daily basis and we love them unconditionally. You are doing the right thing!
