When I used to clean houses for a living, we would clean rust stains with using a piece of window screen and a small amout of Comet. It doesn't take a lot of elbow grease and it doesn't damage the enamel.
I would like to know if anyone knows how to get the ugly rust stains out of the toilet. I have rust stains around the rim of several toilets and have tried every kind of cleaning agent on the shelves at several different stores. I cannot use the fresh flush kind as we have a cat that drinks out of the toilet. My husband is not consistent with putting the lid down. I would love to hear some suggestions and maybe will find one I have not tried. Thank you
Hi everyone! I would like to thank all who responded with several ideas I have not heard of. After buying the Rust remover, I noticed it said not to use on white color toilets. Mine are colors so I did not use it. I used the pumice stone and with a little elbow grease the stains came off. Again thanks to everyone for the great responses.

Try using rust remover for clothing. You'll find it in with laundry product; it comes in a small, brown, plastic bottle.
Hey N.
I thought that was a stain of the actual commode, but found that it is thick like a coating and will chip off but you have to be careful not to 'scratch' but still, the scratches are better than the stain! We moved into a little farm house and I thought I was going to have to replace the toilet they were so bad! I'd never had them before.
I went to the dollar store and bought some strong stuff - probably along the lines of that CLR they advertise on TV, but it was amazing and took almost all of it opff in about 10 minutes. There are lots of WARNINGS on the bottle you need to read. The brand I used was called SNO BOL and it mentioned "stubborn rust stains" on the bottle. To get it all, you might have to turn the water off and empty the bowl, but it may come out without that.
Hope that works for you.
Blessings
There is a product in a gold colored can called "Barkeepers Friend". I have had success with it removing rust on many different surfaces. Put some in a small bowl and add enough water to make it pasty. With gloves on, apply the paste to the rust stains and let it set for a while and then try scrubbing it. I also use cleaning products from Melaleuca and those work well although I have never tried them on heavy rust stains as of yet. Hope any of this helps!
Try pouring a cheap bottle of cola into the toilet at night before bed. Put the lid down, and in the a.m. flush. Voila...stains gone!
Hi N.,
Have you tried Get Clean's Scour Off? That stuff is awesome...it's also safe so you don't have to worry about your cat. http://www.shaklee.net/thewrightplace/product/00430
Hope that helps,

PS. I also noted the hardest thing about being a mom is letting the kids spread their wings and leave home. My younger daughter just moved with her 8 yo daughter to SC this past week. My house is soooooo empty. A couple of the rooms still echo. I've even turned into a regular water faucet! How did you deal with that?
Bam is pretty good. Make sure the water is out of the tiolet first. Close the door so your cat will not get in. Let it stand for at least 1 hour and see if that will help.
I work as a custodian in a church. The toilet stones you can normally purchase at Walmart works great. I purchase mine from a warehouse that sell commercially to businesses, and you can by only one if you want.

I know this sounds silly, but I've heard a can of Coca Cola will do the trick. Good luck and God bless. A.
I use a Magic Earaser with a little bit of cleanser & rinse it with hot water
I would try a pumice stone (what you use on your feet). It works really well at getting stains off the bowl.

When I was first married we moved into an old duplex, the toilet was very stained. I bought some Sno Bowl, just because it was cheapest-it wasnt my plan to get the stains out of a rental apt toilet, but it removed the stains. Careful though I got some on the rug and it ate a hole in it!
Get a 2 Liter bottle of cheap cola and pour into toilet. Leave as long as possible. The carbonic acid in cola will eat the rust right off and won't hurt the cat if it drinks some, just might make it a little hyper! It works great!
I have well water that leaves bad stains in the toilet and shower to take out the rust rings i found "the works" found at the dollar store and wal-mart for 1.25 not much scrubbing either
We are on well water and have the same problem. I use a pumice stone to clean mine. At Wal-Mart you can find them in the same section as the cleaners. They are in a small rectangular box. If you can not find one there, go to the cosmetic section where the foot lotions and pedicure stuff is. They all work the same. You don't have to use any cleaning agents with them, just some "elbow grease".
My parents have the same problem. My mom uses something called Iron Out, maybe Iron Rid? She gets it in the plumbing section at Wal-mart. It works wonders! She also uses it on her white laundry because their water is so harsh that it stains her white clothing. Anyway, just a suggestion. This stuff really works!
Get the product from the hardware store - it's for stains and calcium deposits and will remove it. I can't remember the name - just ask and tell them what you need it for. I've dealt with an Ace Hardware here and they figured out what I needed. It worked beautifully!!!
Good luck
Hi N., I grew up with hard water and believe me I know how you feel. In the toilet we used "The Works" toilet bowl cleaner. We also had a white sink in the kitchen, it took the stains off there too. Also for your white clothes...."Iron Out" it is in the hardware section of Wal Mart or you can get it at any hardware store. We use to mix it up in a big trash can and soak our whites before washing them, to take out the yellow stains left behind from the water. Oh...VERY IMPORTANT...these products produce awful odors, but they do work. Use good ventilation. The cat drinking out of the toilet isnt a problem if you make sure and flush a couple of times after you use the product. Good luck.
I had them for years... my mom saw them & told me to pour an entire bottle of apple-cider vinager into the toilet & leave it for as many hours as possible, then just flush. 2 treatments & my toilet was sparkling clean. I couldn't believe it. Try it & good luck!!
I would suggest using Iron Out(you can find it at Walmart). It's for rust and hard water stains. I have rental property that has well water and leaves those ugly stains and this is what I use and it works GREAT! Please follow the directions closely though.
