Intractable Hiccups

My 11 yr old daughter has had the hiccups for 5 weeks. Nonstop 24-7. She is now on valium which has helped to slow them down but I don't want to keep her medicated until they go away. Has anyone ever had to deal with anything like this before?? We have tried everything and even had an MRI done this week.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

All medical tests that could have been done were done and nothing medical was wrong. I tried the chiropractor also. Finally made an appt. with a hypnotist and after 9 wks, they are gone. Now I pray they will stay gone. Thanks to all the help from everyone.

My son had hiccups as part of reflux as a small child. We brought him to Acorn Chiropractic and she pulled his stomach down. His hiccups and reflux stopped. It was an easy treatment and apparently can happen if the stomach pulls up through the diaphragm a little...might be worth a try. Better than Valium in my opinion.

I had seen a girl with the same problem on the today show. I can't remember what they ended up doing, but the article might be online.

You may think I'm crazy but have you tried chiropractic? I worked for a Chiropractor for several years and we had a patient that was in the hospital (for other reasons) had the hiccups and could not get rid of them. He checked himself out of the hospital came into the office and when he left the office he was not hiccupping. It was amazing!!

Although I haven't had to deal with this issue, my husband gets them all the time. In my home remedy book, it said that if you try a mouth full of sugur and let it slowly disolve it should help? It does help my husband, but again his go away then return. Good Luck to you.

Prior to the onset of the hiccups, was your daughter under a lot of stress? You might want to check into the possibility of a magnesium deficiency. Most american kids get plenty of calcium, but not magnesium. Too much calcium blocks magnesium absorption. Some symptoms of magnesium deficiency are muscle cramps, (hiccups are muscle spasms of the diaphragm,) muscle spasms of the face, (tics)tingling, numbness, anxiety, stress, and insommnia. There are many more.

I give my 16 year old daughter, daily, a 1/2 tsp of magnesium citrate(310 mg) - it is a powder that dissolves in juice.

I also agree with some of the other suggestions about taking her to a chiropractor - especially one that specializes in children.

You want to discover and treat the cause, not the symptom. Good luck.

Get her to an doctor of acupuncture or a chiropractor. An 11 year old should not be on Valium.

I have not had to deal with this problem but there was a girl on the today show onetime that it happened too. You may want to look at nbc.com and see if you can find the story on her. I don't remember how she finally got rid of them But I do know they tried alot of things. Hope this help. Good luck.

Hi D., I remember seeing this on the news.

I would google "hick-ups" and see what comes up.

I remember that there was a young gal that had them, and they did help her. I just don't remember what show it was.

Wow-Since traditional medicine doesn't seem to have the answers, I would take her to a homeopath or learn how to muscle test yourself. Generally, I have found that on a physical level lack of calcium is the issue, either not ingesting enough or the body isn't recognizing it. Which could be because the milk is full of antibiotics/hormones so the body is rejecting it and pushing it through the body without extracting the nutrients. On an emotional level, which seems to be the way the doctor is going, at this point, you could try EFT or SRT (you can google those if find out more if you are interested).

Hi, D.,

I am sorry to hear about your daughter! YIkes! My dad had hiccups non stop, not for quite as long, and they found that there was a tumor the size of a football pressing on his diaphragm! He made it through the surgery, which they did right away when they found out about the tumor. They also had him on medication they give schizophrenic people, and that worked to relax the muscles.

I am a wife of a schoolteacher, and I myself teach third and fourth grade. I really hope your daughter can get help fast!

Hi D.
I have never had to deal with non-stop hiccups but when I do get hiccups. I know its time to go to the chiropractor to have my stomach adjusted. I don't know if this will help your daughter but it may be worth a shot. I hope she gets rid of them soon:)T.

Hi D.. I don't know if this works cos I haven't been around anyone with hiccups since I was told this 'trick' to cure it....so I haven't tried it. This gal says everytime she gets the hiccups, she takes a sip of water, hangs over (like she's stretching her hamstrings, head to the ground) and she swallows the water. She said her hiccups stop instantly.

I hope you can find a cure for your daughter soon.

Hi D.,

No personal experiance with this as a parent but I work with someone with non stop hiccups. The whole time we worked together (about 2 years)he had them, they never went away during the time we worked together. They started a few years previous to us working together. He seemed to have learned to live with them and I got use to working with him quickly.

Below the lady said there was a story on the Today show about it, here is the link to it:

Hope you get some answers! I have found that you need to do a lot of research about stuff them approach the doctor. Now with so many problems/illnesses it helps if you come to the doctor with knowlage about what is going on... you can also then suggests things and the doctor then can say if it is a good or bad idea.
