I think it's important that you are concerned about dental hygiene and good practices with your toddler. However, if you do too much on those tender gums or if you get your children to the point where they resist any toothbrushing at all.
I'd spend more time making brushing fun, finding a song to sing that lasts the right amount of time for toothbrushing, etc. You can mix that up with them choosing a different song to play on an MP3 player or CD - as long as they aren't singing instead of brushing!
I'd talk to your dentist - it's a free call and someone will call you back if they'r not available at the moment. The hygienist can help you even if the dentist is not available, but these kids are this dentist's current or future patients so he/she should be very motivated to help and advise.
