Insight into the Male Mind

K, here's the thing: I would like to get my guy a snow blower for Christmas. He does not like to shovel. He does not like it when I shovel. He is not a very thorough shoveler. We get A LOT of snow in Upstate NY. If I go out to shovel when he's here he runs out in a huff saying he was JUST about to do that! If I shovel before he gets home, he says I TOLD you I'd take care of it when I got home!

I really don't mind shoveling. I really don't mind that he needs to Be The Man and shovel himself. We don't have a huge driveway. I know he would like a snowblower but......

I think a lot of US would NOT like getting a major appliance as a 'gift'. It's not a gift, it's a tool everyone uses to take care of the entire household's needs, you know?

Do they think the same way we do? Or do you think he'd be happy with the damn snowblower??

TIA
Have a great day!!

In my experience (my dad and fiance are total tool junkies - both well rounded mr. fixit's), they LOVE and PREFER useful, utilitarian, manly gifts to anything sentimental and, well, useless. LOL

I'd say to get him the snow blower... and perhaps you can put a note with it (to be opened in private) that since he'll save so much time blowing instead of shoveling snow, there may just be a little extra time for blowing other things... ;) Nasty, I know... sorry to all the 'nice' ladies out there for that last remark!!! LOL

IMO most guys think appliances (aka things with MOTORS) make great presents. My husband once gave me an automatic can opener for my birthday. Bless the man...But what was he thinking?

I got my husband a lawn mower as a gift. He loved it. Spent all summer waiting for the grass to grow.

Are you kidding me? :) all the men I know don't mind getting any tools for Christmas!!! It's us ladies that have an issue with that :) I mean, don't give me a microwave that the entire family is going to use and tell me that's my x-mas gift!!! Better give me a gift card to a spa than a microwave lol!
But men are different than us! they don't mind because they know they are the sole and complete user of that tool ;)
Blessings

Yeah, my understanding is that nothing with a plug or a motor counts as a gift for US, but they love it!

And FYI--here's some inside into the male mind:.......space.....tumbleweed.....ummmm, sandwich.......horny......tumbleweed..........space........sandwich.......(repeat)

He'll be thrilled... especially if you attach some coupons for hot chocolate or other forms of payment when the task is done.

My husband bought a snow blower with some of our wedding $$ and he cares for it like another child! He have a good sized driveway, but I've shoveled it in under an hour with breaks, so it's not enormous. However... he gets that thing out and has it down to a science- also does the neighbor's driveways while he's at it!

Hahaha! That first paragraph was hysterical! I say get the bloody snowblower. Unless he's Ryan Seacrest, he'd probably love the gift.

Too funny. I think he would love the snow blower and he might say "I was just about to buy one" LOL! He will appreciate it everytime he is out there in that snow.

He's a man and that is a man gift :) my husband was more than happy when I bought him one a few years ago. I've given him drills, tools, jacks, jack stands, floor mats, etc. and he has been happy with all of them.

Yep, get him the darn snow blower.... and then a leaf blower, and if you feel so inclined... some sexy underwear for HIM. Never mind us the 'women' always having to get that for ourselves... or doing it for "him" kind of thing.
Just switch the tables.

Oh and maybe get him a t-shirt that says "I was just gonna do that!"
E-bay... has personalized t-shirts.....

side note: some "Men" ... just don't like that their "Wifey"... can do 'manly' things too and be good at it. Case in point: my Husband, during an irritation/argument with me about my asking him to HELP around the house said: "YOU don't need a Husband or Man... you can do everything a Man and Woman does.... you are just a one-woman island unto yourself....you're like a Man AND woman put together... why do you need my help!" and he was all puffed up like a stuck-irritated Puffer Fish.... venting his 'male' irritation...at me. I almost.... laughed. He had a point... LOL
So sometimes... I will tell him "Honey, can you change the light bulb???" even if I can do it myself. Makes him feel important.... (wink).

Happy Thanksgiving,
Susan

I think you should move to California, and then it would be a moot point.

You've been married a while, right? After 20 or so years, I don't think people still expect rings and roses.

Sure, give him a snowblower, why not.

(p.s. - Gotta say, your question's pretty funny. I can't imagine my husband caring a damn if I did his chores. More time for him to read the paper. Your guy's a snow shovelin' stud.)

I've found, men like gifts they can actually USE. My husband would much rather get a tool, or something practical. Just make sure, he doesn't use it super earlier in the morning! My neighbor uses their leaf blower at the crack of dawn and I could strangle him!

Most of the men I know prefer gadgets, tools and tech gifts and are perfectly happy. However if in doubt, no man objects to you getting yourself lingerie to wear for him for the holidays along with the tool.

My husband just called and was on the Sears website, he wants a jack for his truck :). And he also wants a router table so he can put up the crown molding in our house. The bad part is, that he will have to go get these things on Black Friday because he has to work and I don't...but he has to leave for work at 430...so he will have to go earlier to get them and I will stay home with the kids. It works out. But he will be happier with those. Me, I am asking for a new pots and pans set and maybe a new dishwasher or stove...trying to decide how high I want to put the 0% balance on my Best Buy account :).

I got my hubby a snowblower for Christmas one year. He was thrilled and could barely wait for it to snow so he could finally use it. You may want to take a trip to a Home Depot or something similar and just casually walk through that section and gauge what he's interested in. Some things to consider is horse power, electric vs gas, size of area that he'll need it for vs the size area that the blower he's interested in can handle. There's also something about augers, but I don't know enough about that topic to advise you. Again, just take him in to look around and see what he cares about in it and what he doesn't. No sense getting him a snow blower that he won't be happy with.

My Hubby "Heck Yeah!" "More time to watch ESPN." Me personally, I would like a functional gift as well. For example we need a new toaster, our oldest jammed mini pancakes in there and got them stuck which shorted out the two inner sides of the wiring. BOO!
As long as the Snow Blower is not the ONLY gift. Obviously it is a pricier item, but get something that "Says you care" too!

I asked my husband (he's working from home today) and he said that if it was a tool or appliance he wanted, he would love to get it as a gift. But, if it was something he didn't want, then he would not be happy to get it as a gift.

Hope that makes sense!

My husband said...YES YES YES...he would love a snow blower!! We live in Texas now so we don't need one but he grew up with lots of snow and said he would have LOVED one. If we ever move to upstate NY...it will be at the top of his gift list.
