Hurt Wrist

My 2 year old climbed out of her crib and hurt her wrist. I didn't see her fall but she is acting like it hurts her. She is acting normally, I can't see any injury ( no swelling, bruising, etc) but it's been two days and she is careful I don't touch her wrist while I am dressing her or strapping her in the carseat. I am watching carefully to see if she is using her hand and she is just more cautiously. I am taking her to the doctor tomorrow, but its just eating me up that it could be a serious injury and I just dismissed it thinking it'll be better in a day. Can anyone share the symptoms(or any stories) of when your children broke or injured a wrist( or any other part)? TIA

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Just got back her wrist is broken in two places. They put a splint on and we have to go back to get a cast put on. Poor thing... And she is her happy self.

Please don't feel guilty if it turns out to be something that needs medical attention. It's reasonable to wait and see before going to the doctor. You have been responsible and watched to see what was happening. You did not just dismiss it. You waited and watched.

It could be a green stick or buckle fracture. They usually swell, but not always. When a friends son was one, he did something similar as your DD and he need up breaking his arm.
But it could also just be sprained. The only way to know for sure is to have it x-rayed.
Please don't beat yourself up about it! Most of the time, the swelling has to go down before a cast can go on.

My son broke his wrist several yrs ago. It hurt and he cried a lot! He couldn't move it and he did not act normal at all.

She probably strained some of the ligaments and it's a little sore. Two yr olds don't weigh much and when they fall on their wrist, it's not like a large person's weight on a wrist.

We dropped our son off at a sitters. When we picked him up he was in his pj's and they told us they think his arm might be hurt. The mother was very worried. We put him to bed thinking perhaps he is just pretending. He held his arm to his side and would not move it. But when he slightly moved it he seemed ok. Just slightly odd behavior. The next morning he seemed like it was hurting him so I took him in. Turns out that his elbow was out of joint! The pedi popped it back into place right then! Ugh poor little man. I felt bad for him. The pedi told us that sometimes when you swing a child by his arms (around in circles ) his little joints can be pulled out of place. We still swing our kid around but by his armpits holding on well. But we realized how tough our kid was he cried for a min tops after they snapped it back. And he did not cry durring the night or seem very upset by it being out of place. Hope your little girl feels better soon. BTW I never had a broken bone or major injury I lived a some what safe and dull childhood. So I have a silly thought that if they dont ever get bumps and scrapes while playing they arent living it up right!

I agree with Marda P

well my daughter broke her wrist and there was no signs but i could be a hair line fracture but i most likely if and thing is she broke her growth plate this is when a doctor isn't sure but knows it is something more than a sprained wrist normally there right she might need a cast but she could be faking it if u have been seeing a diff. how she acts with it it probably is one of those two but doctor should find out ( it could also just be a sprained wrist)

Do not beat yourself up about it. My daughter fell on the playground at school in 4th grade (not even a call or note from the nurse) and broke her arm. She complained that evening that it ached but it did not seem swollen or anything. She got Advil and a kiss, and she did not complain about it again. I noticed about 10 days later that her arm started looking a little odd. The doc and ortho confirmed the broken arm but they did not even cast her - just a brace and restriction from PE and sports. Her arm is just fine now. Visit the doc and don't feel bad either way.

When my 10 year old broke her wrist, it hurt for a day and then the next day she was a teeny bit swollen and in pain so I took her to carenow. It was only a small fracture, but she was in a cast for 6 weeks. Make sure you give her some motrin for any swelling/pain and get her to the doc just in case.

My oldest did the exact same thing, just before she turned two. Gave her some Tylenol, and she seemed fine, the next morning. No bruising, no swelling. My father (who's had experience with broken bones), said that since there was no bruising or swelling, it was probably just sprained.

After a few days of her saying, "Ow, ow." when she would turn it a certain way, I took her in for an x-ray. It was indeed a buckle fracture, just above her wrist. Though not necessary to set it, they put a cast on it, to prevent her from landing on it wrong, and breaking it all the way through. My personal favorite was all the ugly looks I got, from total strangers.

Just in case, welcome to "The Mother of the Year" club!!! :-)

Definitely get her to the doctor.
My kids haven't broken a single thing, but I have broken lots of bones and sprains can actually be worse than a fracture because they can take longer to heal.
It's good she's being gentle with it.
If you can, get her to sit still as much as possible and keep it elevated on a pillow.
Let us know what the doctor says.
