Is there a database I can search? I need to see if a business name is taken, and I have no idea how!

(Still bummed I missed the wackiness today. Sigh.)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

This would be for a small, personal craft business. Mostly selling things on etsy. I just don't want to take a name that is already a business of some sort.

Thanks! I've checked everywhere, and the name I want is available.

The secretary of state may tell you if a business is registered as a corporation or limited liability company, however, a business does not have to be incorporated.

You can search through the city and county business licensing database. Here in Southern Nevada, there are 4 different local governmental agencies to search. Clark County, City of Las Vegas, City of Henderson, City of North Las Vegas. They are all within 30 miles of each other.

We can all just ignore your question and answer it through a question.

Dang! I foiled myeslf :(

Anyways, I used to know how to do this when I choose my business name a long time ago. You can check through your state agency and they can give you resources on this though.

If you go to someplace online like "Go Daddy" www.godaddy.com, you can search website names, and see if it is taken or not.
This would be for .com and all the other "dot" extensions, of which there are many.

Of course, this is pertaining to online, sites/businesses.

Do you have an attorney working with you on the business set-up, or in incorporating? Our attorney did a trademark search when we were opening our restaurant. I think you can do it yourself though. I found this: http://www.ehow.com/how_###-###-####_determine-company-na...

You can do it at the county tax office. I believe as long as you are doing business in just one place you can use the name as long as no one else in the county has chosen it.

When I filed for a new business at the Dallas County Clerks office, they had a few old computers in the waiting area where you could check the other business names. That was in 2002; it might be different now! But that would be the first place to start - at the County Clerk's office where your business will be.

Are you talking about those two non-sensical posts by Rebecca F? I reported one and later saw them both removed.
