How Reliable Is a Vasectomy?

I was on birth control pills for 8 months and my husband got a vasectomy done 4 months ago in February and I just recently stopped taking the pill. Since being off the pill, I have been extremely paranoid about being that chance (if any) of getting pregnant. Can anybody tell me their hubby had it done and it was successful even after many years? lol :)

What can I do next?

Hi BusyMomOf3, My DH had his vasectomy in 2004, our wonderful son was 3. We got a good/reliable recommendation for what turned out to be an excellent urologist. We have been very happy with the results. I am currently not on any birth control and we have had no pregnancies since his procedure was completed. I hope I'm not oversharing but what I will say is that it was the very best decision for us, we made it after great consideration, and I am grateful to my DH that he was willing to take this step so we could manage our choices going forward. Best of thoughts to you and your DH as you make this important choice. :-) S.

Well, my husband got snipped when Kiddo was about 8 mo. and it's been over five years. I have to say, however, that I've been on b/c for my own health reasons for the past couple years, so we are doubly-protected. Still, no 'accidents' when I wasn't.

Did your husband go back and provide the sample to prove there are no viable swimmers still getting through? That's likely your best way to know.

Once the doctor give the OK! to resume activity, you should be alright. I got pregnant effortlessly, so this was a big concern for us as well. I have to say that it has been about 7 years and we have had no issues. I do not, nor have I since the vasectomy taken any sort of birth control. My youngest is soon to be 8 yrs old and we have had no pregnancies or worries about it.

My husbands aunt and uncle only wanted one child. Uncle had a vasectomy and 14 yrs later auntie got pregnant, whoops. There never was an explanation.

Did he get clearance from the doctor? It's never 100%, but the chances of getting pregnant after a vasectomy are rare, but make sure you wait until his doctor says it's okay. I have heard of cases where people assumed they were "good to go" right after the surgery and have gotten pregnant.

My husband had his 4 years ago and we have used no protection since getting the clearance from his doctor, and no pregnancies. Just make sure,as others have mentioned, that he goes in to give a sample so they can make sure the vasectomy was successful. Usually supposed to do this 3 months after the operation.
