Hello ladies,
I just went to the Dr for my 6 week checkup after baby #3. It has acutally been 71/2 weeks since I had him but bad weather delayed my appt. Anyway I am exclusively breastfeeding so she perscribed Errin a progesterone (sp?)only birth control pill. I started them yesterday and I'm wondering how long before they kick in. I looked through the info in the pills and it only said if you miss a pill not just starting them. It said if you missed a pill was 48hrs of backup protection, but I thought it was like 2 weeks when just starting- but I've only taken combo pills before. I haven't had a period yet because of the breastfeeding. Anyone know? I don't want to take any chances! Thanks!

What can I do next?

With POPs (progestin-only pills) you should make sure that you are being very, very careful with how you take them. You should take them at the same time, every day and DO NOT skip one! If you miss one or you are a few hours off, use a backup method.

In most normal cases, you should be able to depend on the POP as your method of birth control after you make it through one pack of pills. If you don't want to take any chances, either remain abstinent through the first pack or use a backup method. Also, with POPs, many people still don't get their period, so be aware of that too (the lactation amenorrhea may be a factor).

I do not remember exactly how many weeks. It seemed they told me the first pack. 3-4 weeks is probably the safest.

I am currently using Errin also. I am pretty much exclusively breastfeeding, but have on few occasions used formula. My dd is 5 months old and I have not had my cycle. This will not force you into your cycles. I thought it would and when I wasn't having one I was so scared I was pg again and I wasn't ready. Thankfully I'm not!! This is the first baby that I haven't had a cycle by the 2nd month. I was parinoid, but was reassured by the Pharmicist several times that you don't have to have a cycle. The Pharmicist said she nursed for 9 months without a cycle. So like she told me, "Enjoy!" :)

Call your doctor. Don't rely on the moms to answer this question.

Use a back up method for the first pack of pills. Just to be safe!!! I took Errin when I was bfing too. Be warned, it will force you to start your period, even if your body isn't ready. The first one for me was AWFUL! It's nice to have that protection though.
